Why Is There No Tony Stark Cameo In The Black Widow Movie? The Director Explains The Reason

Black Widow director, Cate Shortland explains why Tony Stark did not make a cameo in Black Widow.

Cameos have become a staple in the MCU. So it was only natural to expect a cameo of some sort in Natasha Romanoff's standalone Black Widow film. In the news leading up to the release, many reports suggested that Tony Stark will be making a surprise cameo in the film.

But after watching the film, there was not a single glimpse of Robert Downey Jr.Tony Stark. Why?

The Black Widow director Cate Shortland revealed the reason for Tony Stark's absence during an interview with Total Film. She said that many proposals were discussed during the film's production.

“Initially, there was discussions about everything, about all of the different characters,” Shortland started.

But in the end, the team decided that Natasha was strong enough to carry the film on her own without the help of "the boys".

“What we decided was, and I think Kevin (Feige) was really great, he said, ‘She doesn’t need the boys.’ We didn’t want it to feel like she needs the support. We want her to stand alone. And she does,” added Shortland.

As much as it would have been cool to see Tony Stark make an appearance in Black Widow, it's understandable why they decided to omit a cameo.

Natasha Romanoff is among the few members of the Avengers without any superpowers or super special gear. Her success on the team comes mostly from her skills as a fighter and her ability to be resourceful with what she has. In the MCU, where superpowers and high-flying tech reign supreme, characters like Black Widow and even Hawkeye seem weak. Having Tony Stark or maybe even Captain America come in with some form of help would have made her seem even weaker in the eyes of the fans.

It was definitely a good call.

Natasha managed to save the day all by herself. Of course, she had some help from her "family", but she definitely ran the show.

Black Widow premiered on July 8th, 2021, and stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, Olga Kurylenko, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, and Rachel Weisz.
