When Will Wednesday Season 2 Be Released?

Production listings are stating that Season 2 is scheduled to begin filming in the Fall of 2023. This means that we're not likely to see the new season until sometime in 2024.

Jenna Ortega mentioned during an interview with Glamour Magazine that early prep for season 2 has begun. She said:

We are starting to prep season two of Wednesday, which…has been exciting. Just developing new storylines and seeing where characters are going. Starting those conversations has been really, really fun. I think it’s going to be bigger and better, which is cool.

The first season began filming in September 2021 and wrapped filming in March 22 before being released in November 2022. The second season could follow this same path and it's likely that we can see season 2 in November 2024.

According to listings related to the show's second season, the aim is to commence production in Fall 2023, with some sources suggesting a potential start by the end of the same year. This implies that filming is not likely to commence until September 2023 at the earliest.

During a Formula 1 grid walk segment on Sky Sports F1, Martin Brundle engaged in conversation with Michael Douglass and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The latter pair confirmed that the filming schedule was presently slated for Fall 2023.

Later updates in the production listings have outlined that shooting is planned to kick off in Romania in October 2023, operating under the codename PILGRIM.

However, it's crucial to bear in mind the ongoing Hollywood strikes, which have significantly impacted the development of Wednesday's second season. These strikes have cast uncertainty over the anticipated October 2023 filming initiation. The Writers Guild of America (WGA), responsible for the show's writing, has been on strike since May 2023, thereby halting any script-related progress. Additionally, the strike by SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) commenced in July 2023, which means that as things stand, unless a resolution is achieved, the planned autumn filming commencement will likely be delayed.

Recalling that the first season's filming spanned six months from September 2021 to March 2022, culminating in its release in November 2022, it is evident that the ongoing strikes have complicated the task of making accurate predictions.

Currently, even a release date in late 2024 appears improbable due to the extended duration of the strikes. Consequently, it's plausible that the second season might not grace our screens until 2025.

Interestingly, there is an indication from a source that Netflix recently extended the licensing period for Wednesday by two years, with the show's current tenure set to conclude on November 20th, 2024. This raises the question of whether Netflix might be contemplating a release on November 20th, 2024.

Who Will Be In The Cast Of Wednesday Season 2?

The entire main cast of Season 1 is expected to return, including Jenna Ortega, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Emma Myers, Moosa Mostafa, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Naomi J. Ogawa, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Fred Armisen, Victor Dorobantu, George Burcea, and Isaac Ordonez.

It's unlikely that Gwendoline Christie’s character of Larissa Weems will return as she was poisoned in the first season.

We also don't know if Christina Ricci's character Marylin Thornhill will return as her fate at the end of the first season is still uncertain.

What Will The Story Of Wednesday Season 2 Be About?

The details of Season 2's plot are still under wraps, but showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have said in a conversation with THR that they plan to explore Wednesday's relationships with her friends and family, as well as her supernatural powers.

“For us, the show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that. The fact that they really connected with audiences, it has been really gratifying. So, we’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like?”

Jenna Ortega spoke to Variety in an interview in June 2023 and gave them some insight into the new season and spoke about what we could expect from the new season.

“It’s still coming together, but we’ve decided we want to lean into the horror more. We’re ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We’re going to get bolder, more dark. I’ve never had to do a serious period piece before. Was there anything you have to do to make sure things are accurate?”
