AMC is in trying to create a "The Walking Dead" universe and this will involve multiple spinoff series and films featuring characters of the past and the present.
The Walking Dead Series is approaching its tenth season and many are wondering what's next. There is the possibility that the series will just keep going on and on but after the record low viewership of the Alpha origin episode one might think that it's time for the show to branch out. And well, this is exactly what AMC is planning on doing.
AMC is trying to create, what they call, a “multigenerational” expanded universe of spinoffs and TV movies. So, we are going to get a whole lot of TWD in the future. The only official spinoffs are three films with Andrew Lincoln confirmed to reprise his role as Rick Grimes. However, several other characters from TWD past and present are reprotedly being given their own spinoff.
We can think of many characters who can get their spinoff series and sources close to Trinikid states that Negan is currently being pitched. The comics already dived deep into this character's history and their is a lot of material to work with. And when Jeffrey Dean Morgan was asked last year if he'd be down to act in a spinoff series he responded quite positively with a big “Hell yeah.”
AMC has also confirmed that a spinoff series will happen with the network COO, Ed Carroll saying: “That is in active development. We’re not yet at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere. But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series.”
If they are choosing characters from the past to make a spinoff series, Negan should definitely be on the top of the list. He has one of the most interesting back stories and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is among the best actors in the series. I will love to see more of his acting chops as Negan.
