Season 2 left us with a lot of cliffhangers, but showrunner promises that all season 2 questions will be answered.
Virgin River is a feel-good series on Netflix that's perfect for those who want gentle escapism from day to day stress.
The series follows Mel, who takes a job as a nurse practitioner and midwife in the remote California town of Virgin River, thinking the place would be perfect to leave her painful memories behind.
The show's low-key and simple vibe made it so successful that Netflix didn't hesitate to announce its renewal for season 2, almost right after season 1's release.
Season 2 has just landed on the streaming platform, but fans are already eager to find out if there will be more.
Let's find out.
We are still waiting for the season 3 renewal announcement from Netflix as of this writing. However, we are pretty confident that this will be here very soon.
Unlike other series that had to wait for at least a month to secure a renewal, Virgin River managed to get renewed exactly two weeks after the first season's December 2019 release date.
Season 2 is still on its 9th day on Netflix, so it is still a little too early for a renewal (even by the show's standards).
The way the series ended, it is quite obvious that the showrunners are planning at least one (or more) seasons to wrap things up.
In terms of the source material, there is plenty of them left from Robyn Carr's book series of the same name, on which the show is based. The novel series has a total of 21 installments. Hence, scarcity is not an issue.
Back in July, What's on Netflix has also reported that the show has been confirmed for season 3. Although the announcement did not come from the streamer itself, the website managed to uncover a filming schedule for Virgin River season 3 set to begin on August 25th through December 11th.
That makes sense because that is what exactly happened with the previous season.
Season 2 filming began in September 2019, before the first season had even aired, and ended in mid-December, a few days before Netflix officially announced the renewal.
The showrunners are keen on keeping tabs with their schedule, starting production on each season almost immediately after the previous (even before the renewal announcement).
The result is that they manage to release a new season in less than a year.
Virgin River premiered on Netflix on December 6, 2019, and season 2 dropped on November 27, 2020.
If the showrunners managed to maintain the same schedule, and if they managed to film without getting disrupted by the Coronavirus pandemic, then we are expecting to see season 3 by November 2021 or earlier.
Season 2 left us with a couple of cliffhangers that must be addressed in season 3.
But before we proceed, please know that the next paragraph contains season 2 spoilers.
Season 2 left us with a couple of questions, such as if Mel and Jack are back together for good. What was the medical news Doc Mullins was supposed to tell Hope before they were interrupted by a surprise re-engagement party? How will Preacher decide between staying in Virgin River or taking that new chef job in San Francisco?
And most importantly, who shot Jack, and will he survive?
Worry not, because Showrunner Sue Tenney has guaranteed fans that season 3 will be answering all of these questions.
Speaking toTVLine Tenney reveals that Jack's shooter will be explored through season three, with the mystery possibly continuing into future seasons. The showrunner also revealed that season 3 will not pick up right where season 2 left, with Mel discovering Jack bleeding from a gunshot on the floor of the bar.
Tenney tells viewers to anticipate "a larger time jump than we had between seasons one and two."
As for Preacher, Tenney vaguely said: "If you watch the show, you know how that character is going to respond to a call to duty."
Meanwhile, Tenney revealed that Doc would have to deal with "some stuff" that will challenge both his relationship with Hope and himself. Thankfully, he will rise above the challenge, but things won't be easy for him.
"He's going to rise to the challenge, but it is a real complication for him, especially for him practicing medicine going forward. Will he be able to continue to do that? The clinic and town are his life, so we will seriously explore that," Tenney said.
Based on the current storyline, the major cast members are likely to reprise their roles for Virgin River Season 3.
They are Alexandra Breckenridge as Melinda "Mel" Monroe, Martin Henderson as Jack Sheridan, Colin Lawrence as John "Preacher" Middleton, Jenny Cooper as Joey Barnes, Lauren Hammersley as Charmaine Roberts, Annette O'Toole as Hope McCrea, and Tim Matheson as Vernon "Doc" Mullins among others.
While waiting for further season 3 announcement, we'll leave you with the Virgin River Season 2 Trailer in the meantime.
