Thorfinn faced a new predicament by the end of 'Vinland Saga' season 1. Find out if the anime will be returning for more.
After almost a year of teasing, fans of 'Vinland Saga' continue to wait for the second season of the historical anime series.
The anime adaptation of Makoto Yukimura's manga aired in Japan in 2019 and left enough source material for another season. 'Vinland Saga' is set during the time of the Vikings and follows the story of Icelandic explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni. He was the son of the legendary ex-warrior named Thors, who was killed during an ambush by a band of mercenaries led by Askeladd.
Intent on finding justice after his father's death, Thorfinn served under the group of mercenaries responsible for his father's death, plotting to get revenge when the time comes.
The first season ended in a whirlwind of events that swept the viewers in mixed emotions. Will the anime return for more? Here's what we know.
Long before the second season was announced, the anime director Shuhei Yabuta seemed to have hinted that the second season is already in the works.
Back in September 2020, the director tweeted a drawing of the three main 'Vinland Saga' characters. The director said that there is a "small easter egg" on the post, and fans were quick to notice the runes drawn under each character. The runes spell out the words sea, son, and two. Those who spotted the easter egg thought that the new season is finally in production. However, the director was also quick to dismiss these theories saying "there is no deeper meaning."
In March 2021, 'Vinland Saga' animation director Abiru Takahiko posted a cryptic statement, which led fans to assume (again) that season 2 of the anime is finally moving forward.
Takahiko said that he has been distracted from work on 'Attack on Titan,' 'The Ancient Magus Bride' and by another project. Fans speculated that his "other work" is 'Vinland Saga' season 2. However, these are still pure speculations, and Takahiko has not provided further information.
In July 2021, 'Vinland Saga' fans finally get the great news. 'Vinland Saga' is officially returning for season 2. The announcement also included a teaser trailer, which consists of snippets of the upcoming season. You can check the trailer below.
The second season is finally confirmed, but there is still no release date.
The first anime aired from July 7, 2019 – December 29, 2019, on NHK General TV in Japan. It seems like the anime was indeed secretly renewed in 2020 (based on the director's cryptic post), which means that production has already begun that's why we now have the official trailer. There is a chance for a new season to air sometime in 2021 or 2022.
We will continue to monitor future updates and edit this space once we get an official release date for 'Vinland Saga' season 2.
The first season ended with a huge turning point for each of the characters. Following his father's death, Thorfinn has been hell-bent on seeking revenge. He finally had the chance to avenge his father's death after he comes face to face with Askeladd in a duel. However, Thorfinn is not up to the task to defeat his father's killer yet, not when his anger and emotions get in the way. Askeladd, Thorkell, and Thorfinn were already working for the Danish Prince Canute. They joined forces to overthrow King Sweyn and put Canute in power.
When the Danish king planned to attack Wales, Askeladd felt trapped. Askeladd beheaded King Sweyn and sacrificed himself so that Canute could seize the opportunity to take over the throne.
Askeladd lost his life in the process, and Thorfinn was taken aback by the death of the man he had wanted revenge against for so long. Thorfinn was brought to an unknown location before he could injure the newly-crowned Canute.
We are expecting the second season to remain faithful to its source material, we will see a continuation of Canute's story when the anime returns.
In the manga, a time skip in the narrative follows after Canute was banished to a faraway place. Thorfinn gets sold into the Scandinavian slave trade. He loses his will to live and his sense of purpose in life. He mindlessly followed every command of his new masters until he meets another slave named Einar. Einar's arrival will change Thorfinn's perspective in life again. The two will work together to earn their freedom and start a new, peaceful life. Slowly, Thorfinn rediscovers his new purpose and finds another reason to continue to live again. The first season focused on Thorfinn's mission to get revenge. However, now that his father's assailant is dead, the second season, if greenlighted, will have to explore a new chapter of his life.
Here is the season 2 official teaser trailer for 'Vinland Saga'. We will continue to wait for the full trailer and update this space once it's available. Anime fans from North America and Australia can also watch 'Vinland Saga' on Amazon Prime.
