Based on the best-selling videogame series of the same name, Uncharted is a globetrotting adventure movie that sees Tom Holland take on the role of Nathan Drake – embarking on his first treasure-hunting mission. But after those two post-credit scenes at the end of the 2022 movie, many fans are already curious about the next chapter in Sony’s cinematic adaptation.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the movie scored extraordinarily well among audiences. Here’s everything we know about Uncharted 2, including what its story could be about and who among the cast might return.

This is more than just pure speculation, though. Sony boss Tom Rothman initially referred to Uncharted itself as "a brand-new franchise for us" in an interview with Deadline. But there's another adage we can throw in to cast some doubt on Rothman's designs: the best laid plans

Uncharted 2 release date speculation

Wahlberg was considered for the character of Nathan Drake before portraying Sully, and other production issues made the film's eventual release seem like a miracle in and of itself. Uncharted had a protracted development phase. Uncharted 2 might hit theatres as soon as the spring of 2024 after receiving the official go-ahead, most likely because it won't have to deal with as many of the same problems that derailed the first movie's production. That is, of course, assuming Sony decides to release a sequel as soon as possible. If all goes according to plan behind the scenes, a sequel may be released as late as 2025. The turnaround period for sequels is typically two to three years.

How Uncharted's Ending Sets Up A Sequel:

The conclusion of Uncharted leaves open the possibility that Sam Drake, Nate's brother, is still alive and incarcerated. Sam is not dead, which opens the door for a sequel and might see Nate's search for Sam continue even if it's unclear where he is in the globe. Sam might become more involved in the plot, and his reappearance might pave the way for his and Nate's next journey. It might also provide an explanation for how Sam managed to live after apparently being shot. Additionally, Gage, a character who works for Roman, one of the video game antagonists, is introduced in Uncharted's conclusion. Nate's ring, which once belonged to Sir Francis Drake, has captured the attention of Gage.

Uncharted 2 cast: Who's coming back for Uncharted 2?

Tom Holland would, of course, have to be back as Nathan Drake in any potential sequel. He is no stranger to a franchise and like his MCU outings, Uncharted ends with a tease for what's to come in a potential sequel. Mark Wahlberg would also return as his mentor/father figure Victor 'Sully' Sullivan.

Sophia Ali will also likely return, especially since Chloe Frazer's story was left hanging at the end. Antonio Banderas and Tati Gabrielle probably won't return, considering their characters died in the film. It's possible Pilou Asbæk, who appeared in Uncharted's credits scene, will play a bigger role in the sequel alongside whoever might be cast as the adult version of Sam Drake. Uncharted 2 could also introduce Elena Fisher, Nate's future wife in the games.
