Produced by Tsuburaya Productions, it follows the son of Ultraman who must rise to protect the Earth from a new alien threat.
Ultraman, also known as the Ultra Series, is the Japanese superhero franchise that was first launched in 1966. The Ultra Series is one of the most popular superhero productions from Japan and can be said to be the Superman equivalent in Japan. It was first Eiji Tsuburaya, Tohl Narita, and Kazuho Mitsuta. Since 1966 it has been adapted to various other forms of media from the manga.
In 2019, Netflix adapted a new 3D computer-generated anime series based on the manga as well. It was produced by Tsuburaya Productions, the company that produced the earlier Ultraman franchise as well. It follows the story of a hero from the stars who left this world in peace decades ago. Now, the son of Ultraman must rise to protect the Earth from a new alien threat.
The second season premiered on Netflix in April 2022. Here's what you need to know about the future of the show:
Tsuburaya has confirmed that Ultraman will be coming back for a new season. It also announced that the third season will be the final season of the animated series. "Thinking back, we’ve had a long run with anime ULTRAMAN, and now it’s already the final season," the production company said in a statement. "Season 2 introduced original story elements, but its story structure and heart are shared with the original. This is true of the final season, too." They added, "How will this second Ultraman story come to a close? We’re also excited to see how it turns out!"
In the six-part second season, a global mass disappearing event takes place during which Rena and Shinjirou simultaneously vanish. In the wake of these events, freelance journalist Kotaro Higashi investigates this mysterious "disappearance incident." He takes a photo proving that it was the work of aliens and brings it to the SSSP with his girlfriend Izumi. However, a certain incident transforms him into a superhuman with incredible fiery superpowers. Ultraman teams up with Seven, Ace, Zoffy, Jack, and Taro, and together, the united Ultraman brotherhood takes on a new alien threat.
As per the trailer released, we see an immobile Ultraman who is lying down as narrator Koji Ishizaka, once again calling out “Ultraman, get up!” The sound of the Space Dinosaur Zetton, whose overwhelming strength defeated the original Ultraman, echoes faintly. We will see the events after the battle during which Shin and Shinjiro confront Pedant together.
As per the teasers, we know that the anime will be coming back in 2023. A definite date has not been mentioned, however.
