'Grudge': Plot

The movie opens with the arrest of a man who has been accused of murder. While he is being taken away, his son pleads and cries with the police who pay him no heed. We are then taken to an award ceremony where Chief Inspector Harun (Yilmaz Erdogan) receives the Policeman of the Year award in Istanbul. Harun’s senior and best friend, Cevat (Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan), lets him know that he is in line for a big promotion soon, advising him to stay out of any trouble in the meantime. They celebrate his achievement and as Harun leaves, he is abducted by the taxi driver who tries to kill him in the woods. To escape, Harun ends up killing the taxi driver. He then hastily wipes off his prints from the weapon and escapes from the scene of the crime.

The next day, Harun is taken aback when the body of the taxi driver was discovered not where he had left it, but hanging from a crane in a construction site. Harun is put on the case and now he is chasing his own tail. He pretends not to know anything and sets off to find "The Crane Killer" trying to work one step ahead of the police. But his junior, Tuncay Kokdemir is suspicious of Harun. In the course of the investigation, Harun finds himself in more trouble and considers coming clean of his crimes. Just then an actor Gul Cankir comes to the police station and confesses that she was "The Crane Killer."

'Grudge' Ending Explained: Gul Is Avenging Her Father's Death

Gul tells Harun that he and the chief had falsely accused her father who used to work as a server, of poisoning and killing seven people. He was sentenced to jail where he was brutally murdered. That was when Gul had decided to avenge her father's death. She had already managed to kill three police officers related to her father's death. The taxi driver was hired to kill Harun but things had not gone as planned. But she now decides to blackmail Harun with the footage of him killing the taxi driver. She then ends up bombing the chief's car as well.

Gul is then found in a club, overdosing on drugs. Before her life slips away, she tells Harun about her brother and collaborator. Turns out, Tuncay was also in on the plan the whole time. He had joined the police to get his revenge from within. Before Harun can find him, Tuncay leaks the video of him killing the taxi driver. But just as they surround him, to have Tuncay arrested, he confesses that he was the one who had poisoned the seven people for ill-treating his father. He then ends up shooting himself claiming the cycle of grudges will end with him.

The film comes to an end with a clip of a young officer complimenting Harun for being a police officer with integrity. It is actually a flashback to the time Harun had hired Tuncay.
