Annual sales numbers are pouring in from the Japanese box office, now that 2021 is ending, and to no one's surprise, anime is among the top-grossing films for Japanese audience. Anime films have fans all over the world but they continue to dominate the 2021 box-office ranking in Japan, a market famous for its style of film and television animation. 1. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time 

It took eight years for the final film from the Evangelion Rebuild series created by Hideaki Anno and clearly it was worth it. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is the highest-grossing film in Japan for 2021, making over $102.8 million at the Japanese Box Office. The Japanese animated science fiction film has received rave reviews and massive success at the box office, so it's no surprise if it is on everyone’s list for the Best Anime Movies of 2021.



 

2. Case Closed: The Scarlet Bullet

Detective Conan still has fans and many are raving about the 2021 Japanese animated mystery film: the latest movie in the franchise, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet. The Scarlet Bullet’s predecessor, The Scarlet Alibi made over $12.4 million at the box office while Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet made over $76 million, making it the second biggest blockbuster of 2021 in Japan.



 

3. Belle

Belle comes in third on the list and is the only anime film on here that doesn’t have a television anime adaptation. It is the latest feature from Mamoru Hosoda, and is up for five Annie Awards. The fantasy film comes from Studio Chizu, who also brought fans 2012’s Wolf Children. The movie has been particularly praised for its gorgeous animation.



 

4. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie 

This anime did really well, grossing over $35.5 million at the Japanese Box Office in less than a week after its release! The movie is based on the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen 0, a prequel to the Jujutsu Kaisen manga series, both created by Gege Akutami.



 

5. My Hero Academia 

My Hero Academia closes the list with its latest film installment, World Heroes Mission with the synopsis reading: When a cult of terrorists ruins a city by releasing a toxin that causes people's abilities to spiral out of control, Japan's greatest heroes spread around the world in an attempt to track down the mastermind and put him to justice. The film has made over $33 million at the domestic box office and $9 million at the American Box Office.
