The sequel to Tomb Raider was supposed to be released in 2021, but where is it now? Check out all the updates here.
Alicia Vikander is not returning for the Tomb Raider sequel. The film did not perform very well at the US Box Office, grossing only $58 million. Even though it performed well internationally, and MGM wanted another sequel, Tomb Raider 2 is not happening. 'Tomb Raider 2' was originally set to release in 2021, but the pandemic has greatly affected the production of the sequel. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming film.
There is no release date, and it's unlikely we'll ever get one. In July 2022, the film was canceled. MGM did not greenlight the film. However, with Misha Green joining the crew in January 2021, fans believed that the film would eventually happen. In May 2021, we were informed that Green had finished writing a draft for the sequel, titled Tomb Raider: Obsidian. Sadly, it is officially canceled. The major reason behind the film not happening is because MGM lost the rights to the franchise. In September 2019, Warner Bros. confirmed that Tomb Raider 2 would be released on March 19, 2021. Filming was expected to begin sometime in early 2020 with Ben Wheatley as the director and Amy Jump as the writer.
However, in October 2020, Alicia Vikander revealed that the production plan did not push through due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That same month, MGM removed 'Tomb Raider 2' from its 2021 release schedule. In January 2021, Lovecraft Country’s Misha Green was announced to replace Ben Wheatley and Amy Jump as the new writer and director of the upcoming sequel. The reason for Wheatley and Jump's departure was not revealed during the announcement.
In July 2021, Alicia Vikander said that 'Tomb Raider 2' wasn’t officially greenlit, but she is willing to return as Lara Croft for the second time. She also revealed that the script is still in the works.
"Pre-COVID, I would’ve said yes. And now I think it’s a yes still. It’s not greenlit, but the script is in the making, and I think everyone is excited, and I would love to revisit Lara again."
In the first movie, Lara prevented a dangerous virus from escaping an ancient tomb and saved the world. She returned to London and took her rightful place in her father's company. However, she discovered that Trinity, the group behind the virus, was connected to her father's business partner Ana Miller through Trinity's parent company, Patna. Lara realized that Ana had been collaborating with Trinity and Vogel. In the end, Lara purchased her iconic twin guns and vowed to continue her father's work and stop Trinity. The sequel may continue the Trinity storyline or take Lara on a new adventure. The filmmakers might draw inspiration from the "Rise of the Tomb Raider" video game sequel, in which Lara searches for the lost city of Kitezh and a mystical object called the Divine Source. We will have to wait for more details about Lara's next adventure.
If Tomb Raider 2 ever happens, we had expected Alicia Vikander to return to her role as Tomb Raider Lara Croft. However, it is now reported that Vikander is no longer attached to the project. This also leaves the fate of the rest of the cast up in the air.
