It is an animated movie, which could've done a lot better, if it didn't open right after the biggest MCU movie.
'UglyDolls' is an animated musical comedy movie that is directed by Kelly Asbury and written by Alison Peck. The story was inspired by the one written by Robert Rodriguez, who is also the producer of the film. The movie is based on a group of plush toys of the same name and follows their adventures as they try their best to make it through the world, despite their flaws. The voiceover for the movie was done by Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Janelle Monáe, Pitbull, Blake Shelton, Wanda Sykes, Gabriel Iglesias, Wang Leehom, Emma Roberts, Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX, and Lizzo.
The movie, which is produced by STX Entertainment, launched it on a very wide 3,652 screens. In its opening weekend, the movie made a total of $8.5 million, which is $2,330 per screen. Seeing these numbers, a number of movie critics and websites called it as a 'disastrous start'. In the long term, the future of the movie looked pretty grim, given the fact that ' Pokemon Detective Pikachu' will be opening shortly after its release. The numbers were not attractive enough given the fact how widely the movie was released and how extensively the movie was marketed and promoted.
The movie was the second-widest independent animations release after 'Free Birds' which came in 2013, that released in 3,736 theaters but with nearly double the box office and went ahead to garner a domestic total value of $55.7 million. 'Uglydolls' is also the first animated movie that is released by STX Entertainment. The production cost of the movie was somewhere around $45-50 million and it intended to establish the independent STX as a legitimate producer of mid-range animated features. If nothing, this movie serves as a great case study for the difficulty of creating commercially successful family animated features. Many well-established studios make it look quite easy, but in reality, it is a much much more difficult job to replicate.
The movie was originally scheduled to be released on May 10, 2019, but was later moved up to be released on May 3, 2019, so that they do not clash with ' Pokémon: Detective Pikachu'. In its opening weekend, the movie was predicted to gross $12–14 million from 3,652 theaters. The movie ended up making $2.5 million on its first day, which includes the $300,000 collection from the Thursday night preview. Rotten Tomatoes has a 33 percent rating based on 46 reviews, and an average rating of 4.38/10 on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus on the website reads, "Very young viewers may be entertained by UglyDolls, if only because they're less likely to recognize the many familiar elements in its affirmative yet formulaic story." Metacritic scored the movie 39 out of 100, based on 17 reviews by various critics. Cinemascore gave the film an average grade of 'B+' out of an 'A +to F' scale. PostTrak gave the movie 2.5 out of 5 stars and a 51% of definite recommendation.
