How Much Money Did 'The Sun Is Also A Star' Make In Its Opening Weekend?

The 2019 movie is an American Teen drama and is based on the young adult novel of the same name written by Nicola Yoon.

As everyone knows by now, 'John Wick: Parabellum' has performed ridiculously well in the box office and has also broken a lot of records along the way. But, the other two movies that have opened this weekend were not so hopeful. One of those movies was 'A Sun Is Also A Star' and given the performance of 'John Wick: Parabellum', this movie also didn't stand too much of a chance to work any sort of wonder in the box office.

The Sun Is Also A Star

The movie is a teen drama that is based on a young adult novel of the same name written by Nicola Yoon. The movie is directed by  Ry Russo-Young and written by Tracy Oliver and it stars Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton. The primary storyline of the movie follows a young couple who fall in love despite one of their families facing deportation. The movie had its theatrical release in the United States on May 17, 2019, by Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

The synopsis of the movie says:

Natasha Kingsley is a young quantum physics student who, on an ordinary day, meets a charming young exchange student, Daniel Bae. The two quickly form a romantic relationship but must struggle to keep it together in the wake of Natasha’s family facing deportation from their home." The production of the movie started in June 2018. On July 2018, Miriam A. Hyman joined the cast, as Natasha's mother, who is a hard-working native Jamaican waitress and now has resigned to her family's almost imminent deportation.

The movie was released on May 17, 2019, in the US and Canada, and the release date of the movie clashed with that of 'John Wick' and 'A Dog's Journey'. It was initially projected that the movie will gross $6–12 million from 2,037 theaters in its opening weekend. But, to major disappointment, the movie ended up making only $1 million on the first day. The expected estimation was lowered to $3 million and the movie ended up making just $2.6 million, one of the worst-ever openings for a film playing in over 2,000 theaters.

Rotten Tomatoes has given the movie an average of 51%, based on 65 reviews and an average rating of 5.71/10. Metacritic scored the movie a 52 out of 100, based on 24 critics and has indicated that the movie is average.  CinemaScore graded the movie a mere 'b-' on a scale of A+ to F scale.
