The Suicide Squad Tops The Box Office This Weekend And Breaks Records In The Process

The Suicide Squad dominated the box office this weekend becoming the highest-earning R-rated opening during the pandemic.

The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad absolutely crushed it this weekend, coming in at number one in the box office.

The James Gunn directed supervillain-ish flick scored an impressive haul of $26.5 million at the US box office in its opening weekend. On top of that, the film broke the record for the highest-earning R-rated opening during the pandemic.

The film was also released simultaneously on HBO Max and was seen by 2.8 million households this weekend. This is the second biggest release on HBO Max. Mortal Kombat is believed to be the biggest release on HBO Max, but the official numbers were not released.

Coming in below The Suicide Squad in second place is Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt's Jungle Cruise with a $15.6 million haul.

In third is M. Night Shyamalan's Old with $4.1 million.

Then there is Black Widow, holding strong to be in the fourth spot with $4 million. The film has earned a total of $350 million worldwide which is not very good for a Marvel film. Most Marvel films either come close to a billion or cross it. Obviously, the reason for this low number is that there is an ongoing pandemic as well as the fact that the film premiered both in theaters and on Disney+.

This was apparently not part of Scarlett Johansson's deal with Disney and she has sued the company.

Stillwater came in at the fifth with $2.8 million, followed by The Green Knight with $2.5 million.
