The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

Max has officially renewed The Sex Lives of College Girls for a third season. The news came a day before its season 2 finale in December 2022, following a run of streamer cancellations that worried fans about the beloved sitcom.

The Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble series follows four Essex College freshmen housemates as they navigate life, love, friendships, finances, freedom, and sex. Season 2, which aired in November 2022, presented fresh obstacles for our unusual friends: Leighton (Renée Rapp) is dating multiple people, Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) is trying to pay back her student loan, Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) is tackling biochem, and Bela (Amrit Kaur) is launching her own comedy zine.

“Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble continue to brilliantly capture the college experience in the most entertaining and relatable way,” Suzanna Makkos, Max’s EVP of original comedy and adult animation said in a statement at the time. “This series is the perfect balance of comedy, sex, curiosity, and chaos.”

What will next season bring? This is what we know.

When Is The Release Date Of The Sex Lives Of College Girls Season 3?

The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3 premieres Thursday, November 21, with weekly episodes. Ten episodes total.

Max and HBO announced a 2024 season “coming soon” in a sizzle reel on August 4.

This contradicts earlier announcements that SLOCG would launch in the first part of 2024. HBO and Max CEO and Chairman Casey Bloys announced the news on Nov. 2, 2023. The network confirmed the news with a sizzle reel a month later.

For context, season 2 premiered almost exactly one year after season 1. But the 2023 actor-writer strikes delayed it.

Is There A Trailer For The Sex Lives Of College Girls Season 3?

Max released the first season teaser on October 9. Leighton’s (Rapp) final days on the show are teased, along with the girls’ regular antics: Whitney and Kimberly’s “double walk of shame,” Bela’s desire to sleep with the school mascot, and Kimberly unintentionally swiping right on Whitney’s dad on a dating app. Watch the whole thing below.

What Will Happen In The Sex Lives Of College Girls Season 3?

While narrative elements are still unknown, the season 2 finale hints huge changes. Whitney’s ex, Canaan, and Kimberly kiss on campus, unaware that Whitney is distraught. Though Kimberly is unaware of what her roomie witnessed, the betrayal is enough to send Whitney marching to her sorority, demanding to move in with her Kappa sisters.

Chalamet told Teen Vogue that she wasn’t prepared for the consequences of that kiss.

“I was like, ‘oh no, this is drama. It’s going to be drama. Why is there drama?’” she joked. “But I just think it also gives room to explore at the top of season three. That’s going to be such a big interest for the audience too, to see how [fans] react.”

Leighton reunites with season 1 lover Alicia (Midori Francis) after breaking up with Tatum. Despite wanting to move into the Kappa house, she properly changed her mind after an alumnus and donor made disrespectful statements about LGBT and nonbinary persons.

Bela—where do we start?—made a series of terrible decisions in season 2, ending with her furiously criticizing a budding comedy writer who asked for assistance. She was also terminated online for her cruel criticisms. Bela meets with the dean and requests to transfer schools after significant self-reflection and recognizing she keeps hurting people.

Will Bela return to Essex College, and will Amrit Kaur leave permanently? Can Whitney and Kimberly reconcile? Can Leighton work with Alicia again? Too many questions!

Who Will Be In The Cast Of The Sex Lives Of College Girls Season 3?

In season 2, Chalamet, Kaur, Rapp, and Scott were joined by the following series regulars: Mekki Leeper, Christopher Meyer, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Lolo Spencer, Renika Williams, and Mitchell Slaggert.

English actress Mia Rodgers was cast in April to play Taylor, a first-year international student on exchange at Essex College, according to Deadline.

In May, Deadline announced that Michael Hsu Rosen would play Essex student Brian in a prominent recurring role. A series regular on Glamorous, Pretty Smart, Tiny Pretty Things, Rosen guest-starred on The Good Doctor.

Devin Craig, Ruby Cruz, Michael Provost, and Roby Attal were named as new Essex students in June.

Is Reneé Rapp Leaving The Show?

It seems so. On July 10, Deadline reported that Rapp will appear in a “handful of episodes” in season 3 “but will not be a series regular and will depart the show after those episodes.”

Rapp posted a heartbreaking goodbye on social media. “A lot of queer work gets belittled — but playing Leighton has changed my life,” she wrote in part of her message. “I love who I am 10x more than I did before knowing her. I hope she gave y’all a little bit of that too. She’s such a tiny part of representation, but even the tiny parts count. I wouldn’t be half the person I am without her and y’all. I love that bitch more than you know.”

She said, “I’m so excited for this season and I can’t wait for you to see what we have coming for her and the girls.”

Rapp told ELLE.com about her new chapter after releasing her maiden studio album in August 2023.

“To be honest, I think the biggest feeling right now I feel, and it will sound cheesy, but I feel overwhelmingly grateful for everything that I’ve been able to be a part of. And I hope that it continues in my life, and I hope that I’ll be able to get that lucky again. I have made the greatest friends over the last couple years and friends who have come to be my collaborators in music,” she said.

Her January 2024 Vanity Fair interview revealed her plans to leave Mean Girls to seek a solo career. “The people in my life that I work with now care about me as a person,” she said. “And I think that is a difference from things I’ve experienced in the past.”

Rapp may return in future seasons, co-creator Justin Noble said in August 2024.

“[She] definitely still has some lessons and room to grow ahead of her,” Noble told Teen Vogue. “She’ll be faced with a couple of big choices and she’ll have to make a couple of big decisions in all aspects of her life.”
