Production for The Old Guard 2 is now in place as a new director has been appointed. Charlize Theron and the rest of the cast are returning to reprise their roles.
The Old Guard is confirmed to return and Charlize Theron will be reprising her role as Andy. There was some uncertainty surrounding the sequel for some months but Netflix is now officially moving forward with it.
Along with Charlize Theron, the rest of the cast members will also be reprising their roles. However, the director of the first film, Gina Prince-Bythewood, will not be returning to helm the sequel. Instead, Victoria Mahoney will be coming in to take over.
Prince-Bythewood, however, wishes Mahoney well in her role as director. In a statement, per Deadline, Prince Bythewood said:
I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre. I have decided not to direct the sequel, but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter.
Victoria Mahoney expressed just how excited she is to be directing the sequel. She said:
Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard. I must've watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement-being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences. Warmly tipping my hat to the world Gina, Charlize, Rucka, Fernández, Skydance, Netflix, Marc Evans Productions, Denver & Delilah Films and the entire Team daringly put forward.
She said later on in a tweet:
The Old Guard 2: And we have lift off! Everyone who knows me--knows that this TEAM, this story, this genre, this zip code, and this realm is a dream come true. Cannot wait for audiences to see what we're cooking up for you all...
A release date has yet to be announced but with a new director now in place, we can expect filming to begin soon. We will keep you up to date with any updates regarding The Old Guard 2.
