'The Old Guard 2': Everything We Know So Far

'The Old Guard 2' will start filming next year with a new director on-board. Here are all the latest updates.

It's been over a year since 'The Old Guard' premiered on Netflix, and we finally have a confirmation that a sequel is happening!

Our favorite cast members are confirmed to return, but a significant person behind the camera will not.

'The Old Guard' is a massively successful film based on the comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka. The superhero action-thriller follows a team of immortal mercenaries hunted by a massive pharmaceutical company that wishes to uncover the secret to immortal life.

The first film wrapped the plot nicely but left another door open for the sequel.

Here are all the latest updates on 'The Old Guard 2.'

'The Old Guard 2' Renewal

'The Old Guard 2' is officially happening! 'The Old Guard' lead star Charlize Theron recently confirmed the sequel herself. The confirmation took a while, but we are very glad to know that it is finally moving forward.

Sadly, 'The Old Guard' director Gina Prince-Bythewood will no longer return. The success of the first film has led to numerous projects for the director. Prince-Bythewood decided to let go of the director's chair but will stay as a producer.

Victoria Mahoney is now attached to direct 'The Old Guard 2'. Mahoney is the second unit director on J.J. Abrams’ 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,' making her the first woman to direct on a STAR WARS film in the franchise's forty-year history.

“I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre,” said Prince-Bythewood in a statement via Deadline. “I have decided not to direct the sequel, but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter.”

When Will 'The Old Guard 2' Release?

There is still no release date for 'The Old Guard 2.' Netflix movie sequels often take at least a 2-3 years gap before releasing.

The sequel is yet to enter production, and will not likely be available at least until late 2022 or early 2023.

Charlize Theron told Variety that they will begin shooting in the first quarter of 2022. After that, the sequel will have to undergo post-production. Hopefully, the production will run smoothly so we don't have to wait much longer.

What Is The Plot Of 'The Old Guard 2'?

It has been a while since the first film premiered on Netflix. So, let's take a quick trip down memory lane and see how it sets up the sequel.

The first film ends with Andy and her team successfully defeating the pharma exec Merrick. Andy and the rest of the immortals banished Booker from the team as a punishment for his betrayal. They made a promise to meet each other in the same place after 100 years.

But we know that the group might no longer be complete when that happens. We found out earlier in the film that Andy is already losing her immortality, and she won't likely last another century in her current state.

The movie then cuts to six months later. Booker returns to his apartment in Paris and was surprised to see an unexpected visitor--- Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo). Quynh was Andy's immortal lover. They fought countless battles in the past together.

However, their love was cut short. Quynh was locked in an iron maiden and thrown into the depths of the ocean. There, she suffered from drowning and reviving over and over again. Andy looked for her for 500 years but found nothing.

The beginning of Rucka's second comic book portrays Quynh's arrival. The sequel will most likely use Rucka's second Old Guard comic book called 'Force Multiplied.'

'Force Multiplied' sees Quynh with a wicked perspective on humanity, which is understandable considering the horrible fate she suffered from mortal humans. In the comic book, Quynh asks Andy to join her quest to punish the world.

After Andy and the rest of the mercenaries defeated Merrick in the first film, Quynh will likely step up as the new villain in the sequel.
