“I remember asking you one question. One simple question and all you had to do was answer it truthfully and the world was yours. I ask you where my daughter was and I plainly remember you saying that she was in Mas Camp. After much investigation it was discovered that that was a lie. When I come back to deal with you I get word that you escape and you take a bunch of prisoners including Sara-Lee with you.”
“You should blame your dumb henchman not me,” I said, my head still down.
“You know, with all this darkness in you, I could end you right now Jed? I could. But I realize something. I realize that you just wasn’t properly motivated the first time I ask. Apparently the world of riches is not enough for you. I decide to take another approach.” I rose my head, intrigued to know what his “approach” was.
The Midnight Robber whistled the same manner in which you would call a dog. A split second after two blue devils showed up with Sara tied up in iron shackles around her neck, wrists, and ankles. Her lips were pouted and cracked from dehydration and she refused to make eye contact with anyone.
My eyes widened when I saw her and I shouted, “If you do anything to her, I would kill you.”
“Let this be a lesson, for if you ever lie to me again,” The Midnight Robber then rose his pistol and pointed it towards Sara’s head.
“You can’t kill her,” I grunted. “She did nothing wrong. Even the Midnight Robber has a code of conduct”
The Midnight Robbber let out a laugh. “You really think Sara-Lee is innocent? You’re just as brain dead as a jumbie. Sara-Lee and the whole Singh family are monsters. Obeah people. I’m a scientist.” The way the Midnight Robber spoke I could tell that he may have also taken the same pill that I took to suppress the Midnight Robber. It was more Jeremy Duncan speaking than the Midnight Robber. “I’m a man who dedicated my life to the world of scientific discovery. The Singh family brought something else entirely. They brought the true chaos. If it wasn’t for them this would not be possible. Suraj Singh introduced the world to the spirit realm. There are spirits all around but they vibrate at a frequency that is not compatible with the human body so they remain as spirits. But if you can change the frequency of a human body, the spirits can finally find a physical home. The Midnight Robber, the Jumbie, Mama Glow, Anansi, Lagahoo, Blue Devils, Cow man and all of them are just physical manifestations of what exists in the spirit world. The Singh Family dedicated their life to opening that door. All the spirits that exist can now join us in this physical reality. And Sara-Lee is complicit of that. Innocent, no. Witchcraft. Sara-Lee is a second level wiccan. There’s more darkness in her than you can ever imagine. Tell him Sara-Lee.”
Sara inhaled deeply, “Yes, I am a witch. Always have been since I could read. My family have always been witches and it’s all I knew. But I never killed anyone. We talked to spirits, channeled spirits, do all that stuff but it was always for the benefit of the people. We allowed people to talk to their loved ones even if its just one last time. It’s how we survived in India and it’s how we survived here.”
“They channeled the spirit of The Midnight Robber, the jumbie, the Minstrel and all of them into the symbiote. The symbiote changes the vibrational frequency of a human body. That’s the secret ingredient. That’s why it has been so difficult to emulate,” The Midnight Robber said.
“I don’t care if you are a witch. There’s enough of that hatred thing going around,” I said.
“You don’t get it Jed. Her soul is dark, muddied by her years and years of evil practices. Her soul knows no light. Her soul is like the forest floor in a rainforest, canopied by the thickest of trees. The Midnight Robber doesn’t kill the pure. He doesn’t kill the just. He doesn’t out the light but simply stays away from it. But Sara’s soul knows no light.” The Midnight Robber flicked the safety off of his gun. “Sara’s soul knows no purity. No justice. Only death.”
“You can’t…” I started, but before I finish my words the loud sound of The Midnight Robber’s pistol going off bellowed up into the ear. Sara’s entire body exploded into a million tiny little pieces and smoke. The shot was so close that not even blood survived the heat as it evaporated. All that was left of Sara was a cloud of burning ash that fluttered about in mid-air. There was no return, there were no do-overs and there was nothing I could say to bring her back. Sara was gone.
