The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT III: Forever Midnight]

“This is way too much.” I cringed

“I refused to believe it myself but as I said before, denying the truth doesn’t make it any less true.”

“When did the world get like this?”

“When science became limited. The humans conquered the limits of science and were able to do the impossible. But man’s greed didn’t let him stop at the impossible. They wanted to accomplish everything and the only way to do so was by merging science and magic. This merger was around for a while but it was only uttered in hiding. Jeremy Duncan and Suraj Singh have now made it into a public product with plans of distributing it to the entire world in the form of the ACT Programme. If that happens it will be the end of the world as we know it.”

“We can’t let that happen.”

“This is why it is important for you to master the Midnight Robber. You’re the only one who can prevent this.”

My vision suddenly went white. I couldn’t see anything around me and I instantly panicked.

“Calm down. This is my village. It is hidden within the mists. Just keep moving.”

I obeyed and kept running despite my instinct to do otherwise and the fact that I couldn’t see anything. As I ran I began to hear voices playing over and over in my head and I couldn’t shut them off.

“Shit!!” I shouted. The voices got louder and louder in my head and among the voices I heard Selena, but I couldn’t quite make out what she was saying among the other voices. I couldn’t until it was too late.

“Stop running!!!” She shouted but I didn’t.

I ran straight through a concrete wall bursting it into a million pieces of rock and debris. The impact sent me tumbling to the ground in a violent roll. Selena flew off my back and went tumbling as well. The sharp pain of the impact paralyzed me but only for a second. I stopped rolling in a coughing frenzy as the dust invaded my nostrils.

“This boy looks a bit too old to be your boyfriend,” a male voice said.

“I assure you he’s not my boyfriend.” Selena said, getting up from the ground. “He’s our only hope. He’s here to help us.”

“Help? He doesn’t even look like he could help himself,” the male voice said.

I rose up and instantly made eye contact with a young man who had pointy elf ears just like Selena. He wore a long…dress?

“He has the Midnight Robber’s blood in him,” Selena said.

“Yes, I can see that,” The man said, looking me dead in my eyes which I assumed were black.

“Mother is in Mas Camp Sergio and we can save her with his help.” Selena Said.

“We can’t risk the safety of our people because of a hunch,” the man, whose name was Sergio, said. “I can sense that his Midnight Robber spirit is immature. When midnight comes upon us this boy will kill us all.”

“Or not. If he can learn to control his evil desires then we can use him for our advantage.”

“I will not risk the safety of my people for the sake of one boy. We need to kill him before he kills us.” Sergio said.

“Sergio we can……..”

“Silence Selena!!” Sergio shouted. “This boy must be killed!!”

I suddenly felt chains grapple around my neck then my arms.

“You can’t kill him Sergio!!” Selena shouted.

“Watch me,” Sergio said. “He will be one less evil in this world.”

“You will grow to regret this Sergio.”

“I will grow to forget this.”

They dragged me by the chains deeper into the village. The chains were tied around my neck and arms. No matter how much I tugged on it I couldn’t escape. I was trapped. My speech became slurred because I couldn’t hear myself, as I shouted over the external noises and my internal voices but was greatly overpowered.

I was dragged a long way into the village raising dust into the air. I heard cheering and jeering coming from all around me but I couldn’t see anything amidst the dust and mist in the air. I was jerked and pulled until I was directly in the center of two metal poles poking out of the ground, tied up to them by my hands.

“Your days of destruction will come to an end today,” Sergio said.

“I can help you,” I muffled.

“No you cannot, you’re……” Sergio started.

“Yes he can,” said a voice that came from a man whose entire face was hidden over a black cloak and wide brimmed hat. The voice sounded familiar. Too familiar.
