The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT III: Forever Midnight]

“I don’t think I’m strong enough to take on the Midnight Robber. I’m not a hero.” I said.

“Well you are our only hope. The only person who can kill a Midnight Robber is a Midnight Robber.”

“Jeremy has more control over the Midnight Robber than me. I can’t even control myself at midnight.”

“I’ll teach you.”

I wasn’t sure what to think at this point. The whole idea of me being a Midnight Robber was a bit overwhelming especially when combined with everything the fairymaid just told me.

She strode over the water to the river bank. She floated a bit on the land before planting her feet firmly on the ground. As soon as her feet touched the ground the glow around her fell away into golden dust. Her features were now more visible. Tall, slender, and firm lips. Her ears were pointy like that of an elf and her eyes sharp and wide. I had never seen her before but she resembled Mama Glow. Actually, she resembled Mama Glow a lot just younger. She looked like a teenager around the age of sixteen, maybe seventeen.

“You look just like….”

“I get that a lot,” she said as though she knew what I was about to say. Her voice unified and became less intimidating. “I took from my mother while my brother took from my father.”

“Your mother is Mama Glow?”

“Yes. I assume that you met her already.”

“Yes. In these waters,” I said.

“Do you know where she is?”

“No. I was looking for her and my friends. I lost them a couple months ago.”

“Well I came here every night looking for my mother but I couldn’t find her anywhere, not even a body or remains of energy. I am very worried that something may have happened to her. And Jeremy Duncan may have had something to do with it.”

“The last place she was at was a gated village in Caura. I don’t know the name of the village but she checked in three weeks ago.”

“Can you lead me there?”

“It’s kind of far away. A good six hours walk from here.”

“Distance shouldn’t be a problem for us. Your speed is that of a dozen horses,” she said before jumping on my back. I held her down on my back by her legs and her left leg felt extremely hairy on my hand. It was very unbecoming of a female. I looked back at her left leg and it resembled that of a goat.

“Fairymaids are cursed with the leg of a goat. It does have quite the kick though.”

“I could imagine,” I said.

“Most never get the chance to see it.”

“So how do I run fast?” I asked the Fairymaid, changing the topic. “Am I supposed to say some magic words or something.”

“Just run,” she said.

I was beginning to wonder if this girl knew anything about how to control the Midnight Robber. She seemed to know a whole lot about it but I had my doubts.

“Just run?” I questioned.

“Just run.”

I tightened my grip on her, shook my head a bit then I started running. My first few steps were normal but with each additional step I felt my momentum growing and my speed increasing. After a couple steps I was running so fast that the trees whizzed past me in the blink of an eye. The visual reminded me of what I witnessed in my…..dream. I knew it wasn’t a dream but I felt better referring to it as a dream. The only difference was that I had full control.
