The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT III: Forever Midnight]

I walked through the door and entered into a long corridor that was also completely white at first. But with every step the white corridor began to look more and more like a regular hallway with red furry carpets and painted creamed concrete walls. There were even portraits on the wall. Portraits of me. I was thinking of asking where Siri-us Maximus had found the pictures but I assumed that they were from my Internet social profile.

“You Serious Siri-us?” I said.

“Very.”

It wasn’t the answer that I expected.

I kept following the room and up from the floor a manikin popped out wearing a tight fitted khaki shirt, jeans and a pair of thick leather boots. It didn’t seem like the most suitable attire for a meeting with the Prime Minister but it was tight, which was good. I quickened my pace to retrieve the clothes but before I was able to get to it, I felt a bunch of sticky objects grapple on to me. Without a moment’s notice I was naked. My clothes were apparently whisked away into never never land. I quickly placed my hand over my groin but as I did a jet of water came up from all over the room and onto me. I felt the soap all over my skin seeping into every crack in my body. It was incredibly uncomfortable but when the water stopped I felt squeaky clean. Siri-us Maximus told me to open my mouth and as soon as I did a blast of some kind of minty like substance penetrated it, literally exploding within causing a foggy mist to evaporate from my mouth, nose and ears. My tongue, teeth and lips felt like they were on fire but it eventually simmered down.

I then went up to the manikin and began to undress it putting the clothes on myself instead. The items fit me really well. In fact, it was actually a perfect fit. I folded my sleeves all the way up to my elbows and buttoned the shirt only halfway up, exposing my chest.

When I was finished a knife popped up from the floor. I was slightly confused for a while till I realized that it was the same knife that I shoved in my pocket. I looked around ensuring that no one was looking, before quickly grabbing the knife and sliding it into my pocket.

Siri-us Maximus led me down the corridor and towards the office of the Prime Minister.

“Here is where I leave you,” Siri-us Maximus said.

“Ummm…Goodbye.”

I prepped myself by breathing heavily and rubbing my palms together. I fixed the knife a little better in my pocket so as to keep it from sight, then I walked in.

I was greeted in the office of the Prime Minister by the scent of Mangoes. Sweet, ripe Julie Mangoes. It had been a while since I last smelt a good Julie Mango. There were Mango trees near my house in Arima but it wasn’t in season at the time. The smell caused my mouth to water a bit and when I saw Dee Baba slicing through the yellow flesh, even more so.

“Dee Baba. You should go check on the prisoners. I want to have a nice little chat with Jed for a moment,” the Midnight Robber, who sat perched on his throne with his legs cocked up on the table, said. He wasn’t really the Midnight Robber. He was just an average looking man in a suit and tie outfit with a body full of muscles that laid below his black skin. He was now Jeremy Duncan, Megan’s father.

A regular Prime Minister would have had forms and documents on their table but the Midnight Robber was clearly not a regular Prime Minister. His table was packed with guns and long swords that looked sharp enough to cut a man’s courage down to naught.

As Dee Baba strolled out the room sucking down on his Mango, Jeremy started. “Jed Balfour. The youth who survived for months in Jumbie Island without even as much as a scratch on his pretty little face. That’s a new record you know. Most people couldn’t even survive a week. I would have thought that Sara-Lee had something to do with your survival but she’s so weak she can’t even take one step without starving to death.”
