“I think we should get out of here. If we’re lucky them jumbies would still be sleeping. I doubt that they will be up this hour,” Jack said.
“It might have a couple but nothing we can’t handle,” Ronald added.
“Grab as many things as you could find,” Jack said. “We leave in five minutes.”
We all did as Jack said then set off outside the mall. There were still jumbies outside but not as much as the previous day. We easily slipped into the Caura forest without confrontation.
After about an hour of walking through the grassy terrains that beset us, we arrived at a giant concrete wall with a large wooden gate in the middle of the forest. It looked like the same wall in my dream.
“What is this?” Jinx asked, referring to the wall,
“Clearly it is a wall,” Jordan said.
“I know it’s a wall. But what’s behind it?” Jinx said.
“Well, let’s find out nah?” Ronald said, pulling out his sword.
“Put away your sword Ronald,” Jack commanded. “If it’s a community of people behind that wall then we don’t want to set a bad first impression. They could probably help us find Justin and Saraya.”
Ronald placed his sword back into its scabbard without question.
Jack went up to the gate and shouted. “Good Morning!!” No one answered. Jack called again but again, no answer.
“I guess nobody’s home,” Jinx said.
“Let’s find out.” Jack said before pushing on the gate.
The gate seemed heavy so Jordan, Ronald and Jinx joined in pushing the gate until they finally opened it. Suddenly a flock of giant corbeaux stormed out, throwing us all to the ground. The corbeaux didn’t touch us but the wind from their flapping wings was enough to throw us off our feet. We all remained on the forest floor, facing the dirt until the flock dissipated.
“Crap!” Jinx shouted, getting up.
“Stupid corbeaux!!” Ronald shouted.
On the other side of the door there were a lot more cobeaux. They were chewing down on the dead flesh of hundreds of people who lay lifeless on the ground. Jack walked in through the gate and we all slowly followed after him.
“Who would do something like this?” Jinx asked.
“Jumbies maybe,” Johnny said.
“The gate was shut tight. It have no way jumbies could have gotten in. This place is jumbie-proof. And if it was jumbies they would not have the courtesy to close back the gate,” Jack said. He then looked up at the blue sky. “Whoever do this come from the sky.”
Johnny scooped up the blood from a severed head on the ground with his index finger and said. “This blood is fresh. These people did not die too long ago. Probably just a couple hours. I think this happened last night.”
Jordan seemed less concerned about the corpses and more concerned with me for some reason. He had his eyes fixed on me with an unrelenting suspicious gaze.
“We should get out of here. Those corbeaux look hungry,” I said.
“They’re too busy to care about us,” Jack said. “The fate of these people could give us some clues on what happened to Justin and Saraya.”
“You think they were here?” Sara asked.
“Possibly,” Jack said. “If they were walking through the forest for so long they most likely bounced up this village. I would hope that they left before last night but the only way we’ll know is if we look at the bodies. They could be among the corpses.”
“I’ll see if I find them,” Jinx said.
Jack ordered the rest of us to look at the bodies to see if we found them as well. We all scoped out the bodies to see if any resembled Justin and Saraya. I also looked to see if any resembled Megan, Cornell or Mama Glow. We didn’t find anything but there was still a lot of land to cover. I went into a couple of houses by myself and in one of them I found a sword tucked away in a scabbard on the floor. It looked familiar. It looked like mine. It was at that moment that I realized that I didn’t have my sword anymore. I just had my gun strapped to my waist. I picked up the sword and began to inspect it.
“That’s your sword,” I heard Jordan’s voice say.
I jumped in shock as I heard him. “Where did you come from?”
“You killed these people Jed,” Jordan concluded.
“Why do you think that?”
“You went missing whole night then you come back covered in human blood without your sword. Then we find a village of people slaughtered and find your sword among the wreckage.”
“Well I didn’t kill these people.” I said.
“I don’t know you Jed. I don’t know how much you mean to Sara but what you do here is unforgivable. I can’t have you among my people. You’re too dangerous.” He drew his sword.
