“Getting a weapon,” I said.
“Guns overpowered and could slow you down,” Jack intervened. “We use blades.”
“Real men does fight with swords,” Ronald said throwing an encased long sword at me.
I grabbed it in midair, placed the strap over my back and said awkwardly, “Thanks.”
The rest followed after, grabbing swords and knives from off the wall and the table.
“Not even one gun?” I asked, watching the large array of guns that we were about to leave behind.
“If you want to survive out here. You should learn to not depend on guns. They will only get you killed,” Jinx said. “What if a douen try to attack and you shoot and you miss. You will be pushed back by the force of the gun and in that split second your face will be chewed off. Do you want your face chewed off?”
“No,” I answered hesitantly.
“Then, no guns,” Jinx said.
“Time to get out of here,” Jack said as he made his way to the door. We followed him down into a sewer and easily made our way out of the completely empty Red House. It was actually way too easy as there was absolutely no resistance. We got out when the sun was still young and the rays blinded me for a couple seconds as my eyes adjusted to the change in light. The only thing that was in front of us was water. A wide open endless stream of water that was only interrupted by the tops of old buildings, dried up pieces of wood and other floating debris from the ruins of the city. The water was a complete mess!!
Jack was the first one to jump in the flood waters of Port of Spain and after swimming in it for a while he said, “It not that bad you know.”
I looked at Sara and said, “Ladies first.”
She scoffed, jumped in and began swimming behind Jack. She didn’t seem to be infected by the symbiote anymore because her energy levels weren’t degenerating the way they did before and there were no purple sores on her skin. That was good. The Midnight Robber must have injected her with the antidote.
“You coming or what?” Johnny asked.
I was so lost in thought that I hadn’t noticed that everyone was already in the water and swimming away. I sucked up all the air that I could have and then jumped in.
We swam a while until we were able to find an abandoned boat floating around. Jack and Johnny who I realized were the leaders inspected it first before instructing us to get on. Then, using pieces of wood that were floating nearby Jordan and Ronald paddled the vessel as we all sat huddled together. There wasn’t really much space but we made it do.
“You think Saraya and Justin made it?” Sara asked me with worry in her face.
“I sure Cornell and Megan would take good care of them,” I said.
“It was three months since I last see them. That’s a long time especially as they still infected,” Sara said.
“Three months?” I asked, confused.
“Three months. Yeah.”
“No, it wasn’t that long,” I said.
“I’m not going crazy Jed.”
“How long were you locked up in that cell for?” I asked Sara.
“As I say. Three months. Three months and about two weeks.”
I couldn’t understand how so much time had passed since we left Caura. It felt like only a couple of hours but I was unconscious the whole time, so I wouldn’t know. But why was I unconscious for three months?
“You okay?” Sara asked.
“Yeah. It’s just that I was unconscious the whole time. I woke up today,” I said.
