The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT II: Jumbie Island]

“It don’t matter, just don’t tell anybody.”

“Maybe they would understand.”

“Trust me. They won’t understand. The Midnight Robber and my family is the reason why the Twin Republic in this shithole right now. It’s not my fault my father is the smartest man in the Caribbean.”

“Megan is the Midnight Robber’s daughter and we don’t have anything against her.”

“The Midnight Robber doesn’t have a daughter.”

“Yes he has a daughter.”

“And Megan is his daughter?” Sara asked

“Yes.”

“Small world.” Sara said before shuffling through a couple of documents that were on a table in the room.

“So what’s your plan?” I asked.

“Based on these documents here, my father could be alive and I’m going to look for him. Anansi is apparently hunting him down and if I could find him first then maybe I could save his life. If my father is alive, I need to find him.”

“But you yourself say that the Midnight Robber killed him in front of you.”

“I did, but…” She stopped then quickly diverted her attention to the door. She remained attentive for a while before saying, “No snoring.” She was right. The snoring had stopped. Sara stopped completely, trying to detect any movements. There were movements evident outside the door. I whispered to Sara to hide then I went behind a chair that was in the room. Sara tried to reposition the papers on the table the way she found them before dashing to the other side of the room and hiding behind another chair. The door flung open.

Anansi walked in but he didn’t spend very long in the room. He just grabbed a jacket that had 8 sleeves for his 8 legs. It was a fancy blue jacket that seemed to be made of satin. He picked up a cane, stood on four legs and used the cane to keep himself upright as he walked. He then grabbed a couple of documents from the table, shoved it into the pocket of his fancy blue jacket and walked out the door.

My eyes were so fixed on the door that I didn’t even notice that Sara was gone. Where did she go? I came out of hiding, went through the door and hurried through the house looking for Sara but I couldn’t find her. I then opened the front door and saw Sara walking behind Anansi, maintaining her distance so as not to be seen. She continued to cautiously stalk behind him. Had Anansi only turned around for a second he would have seen her. If she was going to follow the man who was trying to kill her, she could have at least been more discrete. I ran after her and quickly pulled her to the ground. “What the hell are you doing?” I asked.

“I want to know where he’s going.” Sara said

“Anansi is a big man you don’t just go following big people without permission,” I said.

“He has insight on where my father is.”

“Or maybe not. Maybe he’s just going to meet some Fairymaids at Caura.”

“I want to be sure. If by any chance he find my father and kill him then the country will be in grave danger.”

“What do you mean? The country is already in grave danger,” I said.

“My father knows how to end this and he wants to end it. That is why the Midnight Robber wanted to get rid of him. All the secrets of the ACT Programme are locked away in my father’s head. He’s the only person capable of stopping it.”

“Well let’s go inside and discuss this like human beings.”

“You could go inside but I’m going to follow him and you’re not stopping me,” she pushed me away, got up then kept walking after Anansi.

“Urghhhh!!” I groaned. “You’re so STUBBORN!!! Just so damn stubborn.” I gritted my teeth, sighed then followed after her.
