The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT II: Jumbie Island]

I was obviously not the one being selfish but I really didn’t want to cause any trouble. I got down on my knees but before I was able to go even lower I felt a force on my back that pushed me down to the floor directly into the spilled food. I was on the floor covered in the spilt food and juice.

Dexter and all the people in the corridor began to laugh at me. I felt my eyes welling up but I was bigger than that. I was already in an embarrassing state and crying would have only made it worse. Instead I got up without saying a word and went off towards the washroom to clean up. But Dexter and his friends weren’t done with me yet. While walking down the corridor a couple of Dexter’s friends jump kicked me on my back causing me to fall again. They kept kicking me while on the floor and wouldn’t stop. I managed to get up and ran down the concrete staircase into the washrooms which were basically right below the corridors. They followed me but I ran into one of the bathroom stalls and locked it. They knocked on the door and screamed a bunch of curse words but I didn’t budge. I just sat on the stool and finally released all the pent up tears while Dexter and his friends banged on the door. They even threw bottles and other types of garbage over and into the stall in an attempt to weed me out but to no avail.

Eventually they stopped banging and when I thought that it was safe to come out I did. I was so relieved when I saw that no one was there. I went to the pipes and washed the food from my clothes and face. I was expecting Dexter and his friends to come back for me but there was no sign of them. Actually, there was no sign of anyone. It was lunchtime and it was expected that the place would have been noisy with students playing on the field or talking loudly but the place was way too quiet for lunchtime. I checked the time on my watch and it was 12:06 so the lunch break was still on.

I finished washing up and I went back up the stairs and onto the field. The first thing I saw was Dexter’s body on the ground face down along with other bodies sprawled out across the field in straight and orderly lines. I didn’t want to believe they were dead so I turned Dexter’s body over and exposed his facelessness. I jumped at the sight of it. I turned over some others and they looked the same. They all had no face. I couldn’t handle the sight but before I could assess the situation I felt a hand grab me by the leg. It didn’t take me long to realize that it was Dexter’s hand.  He pulled himself closer attempting to take a bite out of my leg but I managed to escape from his clutches and run away from him. All the bodies on the field began to rise and I realized I was the main course on the menu. I ran quickly into the staff room, my heart racing and my shirt drenched in sweat. I was hoping to find a teacher but there were none. I was about to lock the door but the faceless students pushed against it disallowing me from closing it. There were too many of them and I couldn’t hold them back. If they got into the staff room I would be trapped and there wouldn’t be any way for me to escape. I couldn’t let them get through the door but they kept pushing and pushing against it until the door was finally busted wide open.
