The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT II: Jumbie Island]

While I walked I heard a loud chewing sound. I didn’t know where or who it was coming from but it caused me to instantly stop in my tracks. I frantically moved my flashlight from side to side in an attempt to find where the sound originated from but the source remained concealed in the shadows. Suddenly, the light in the flashlight completely shut off creating an impenetrable darkness that almost seemed solid. I kept knocking on it but it refused to come back on. I had no choice but to fish my way through the dark which didn’t go so well. After about twenty seconds of walking I managed to trip over something. As I landed onto the ground I heard a loud hiss. I managed to see a figure in the darkness quickly coming towards me. I recognized the figure as the same no faced girl that we had seen before. She jumped on top of me with her mouth open in an attempt to bite my head off. I held her by the neck trying to keep her teeth as far away from me as possible but she was strong and wouldn’t relent. I couldn’t hold on much longer. I picked up my cutlass which was right beside me and rammed the blade straight through the little girl’s skull. She kept forcing herself on me even though she had a blade in her head but her strength decreased over time until she eventually stopped moving altogether. I pushed her off of me then slowly sat up on the ground and stayed there for a couple minutes trying to catch my breath. I pondered what my next move would be and I was stuck between going home or staying out here and looking for the others. I also considered the fact that the faceless girl must have eaten Sara. That would definitely explain the chewing noises but I wasn’t going to jump to any conclusions until I found a body. I got up and searched the area near to where the faceless girl had been and I did in fact find a body. It was actually the same body that I had tripped on. I was extremely relieved to see that it wasn’t Sara but it saddened me when I realized that it was Clive. He was dead. There was a huge bite mark on the left side of his lower abdomen that looked so disgusting it made me want to hurl. I couldn’t even see it properly in the dark and it almost made me sick so I could only have imagined what it looked like under full light. I sighed then just sat down on the ground with my hand over my forehead. I was stressed, afraid, confused and didn’t know what to do. I had lost enough people in my life and it seemed like each one killed me a bit more. I didn’t know Clive very well but the fact that I knew him at all and the fact that I knew how much he meant to Sara made me feel to blubber. My eyes started bubbling when I began to think of Sara and if she was alright.

“Jed!!” a voice that sounded like Sara’s shouted. I jumped as I heard the call. It sounded like it came from the staff room. I blindly and quickly ran to the area where the staff room was located and pushed the shut door open. A ray of blinding light emanated from the room and pierced my eyes like needles, so much so I had to raise my hand up to block it. After a while I realized that it was Sara’s torchlight. I flicked the light switch on in the room remembering that just like my house, the school was solar powered and I was sure that the cells had enough stored energy to last a while. The lights in the staff room came on, disorienting me a bit. On the floor I saw Sara with Justin in her arms.

“You found Justin?” I said, stating the obvious.

“Yeah, he was hiding in here,” Sara answered.

“And Clive?” I asked. I didn’t want to tell them that I saw his dead body outside but I hoped that they already knew so that I wouldn’t have to break the bad news.

“Justin said that he went outside to look for Saraya and he never came back,” Sara answered.

“Saraya took a bag of food and went to the washroom about an hour ago but she never came back either,” Justin said.

“Maybe she’s still in the washroom and maybe Clive is there with her too,” Sara said.

“I doubt,” I said still trying to refrain from telling them what I saw outside. If the faceless girl was Saraya then I didn’t want to tell them that I had killed her. At Least not yet.

“Well let’s go check,” Sara suggested.

“It’s too dangerous. You never know what could be out there. It’s obvious that it has more than just jumbies.”

“Well I’m going to check,” Sara said before getting up and making her way to the door. I stopped her before she could get to it but I knew that there was no arguing with her. She was ballsy enough to actually go outside without me.

“Urgghhh!!” I groaned. “You are so stubborn.”

“I’m sure if it was you out there all alone you would have wanted somebody to come looking for you.”

“I saw Clive and Saraya’s dead bodies in the parking lot. I saw them dead. If we go outside we’d just be looking for ghosts.”

“So why didn’t you say that before?” Sara asked.

“Because I couldn’t.”
