“The stubbornness in this family is REAL!” I said to myself as I sank into the living room chair in front of the television with the console controller in my hand ready to play a game of virtual football. Qualifying for the X-Soccer Online Champions League was a challenging task but I did it. However, winning the league was another story. After playing the video game for about 3 hours I finally decided to take it off and actually do something with my life. I went around the house looking for Clive, Saraya and Justin to tell them that the TV was available but I couldn’t find them anywhere. I peeked upstairs into the room that Sara had gone into and she was still there all by herself staring out through the window at the evening sun. I didn’t want to disturb her because she seemed to have a lot on her mind and was also probably extremely angry about what I had said to her back at the school. I was still considering kicking her and her siblings out of the house because it was the best option that I had to conserve food but I tried not to ponder on it for too long while I barricaded all the doors with wood. I then made my way into the bathroom to take a nice cold shower, whistling a song from the Funky Robots that was playing in my head. I really needed that shower. There was enough water in the tanks for me to take a nice long one too. When I was finished showering I started brushing my teeth but while doing so I heard frantic movements in the house. It sounded like someone was flipping over every piece of furniture in search of something.
I quickly finished brushing my teeth, wrapped my towel around my naked body and made my way out the bathroom to investigate where the noises were coming from. I walked through the house in my half naked state with the toothbrush in my hand as my only weapon. I didn’t bother to take up a better weapon because I was convinced that the barricades would have kept the jumbies out. I still kept alert as I roamed through the house though. The first place that I checked was the room that Sara had been in and I became very concerned and more alert when I didn’t see her. I was also concerned that Clive, Saraya and Justin were also nowhere to be found. I felt some thrills as I kept hearing the noises.
A host of bizarre thoughts flooded my brain. Did Sara and her siblings become consumed by the things inside them? Did they change? I wasn’t sure but it was getting dark and I was sure that I would find out soon enough. The noises got louder as I got closer to the back door and it sounded like someone was hitting the wooden barricades. I slowly went towards the back door fearful of what was there. When I finally arrived at the barricaded back door I saw Sara swinging a cutlass at it. It was night time and an open door would have been our welcome mat to death so I quickly ran up to her and held her back before she could swing at the door again.
“Let me go!” She shouted while trying to escape from my grasp.
“What stupidness are you doing?” I asked her
“Let me go!” She screamed again.
She kept fighting in an attempt to escape my hold but she was too weak. She eventually succumbed to her body’s weakness and stopped. I let her go and as soon as I did she leaned back on the wall, pulled out a pack of FuzGrainz and took some bites in order to build her energy back up. “What did you do to my brothers and sister?” Sara asked.
“I didn’t do anything to them!”
“I know you did something to them! I can’t find them anywhere!” She exclaimed.
“I’m not lying. I just chased them away from the TV.”
“You chased them away?!” She shouted. “And where did they go?”
“I don’t know, I — I thought you knew.”
“Urghhh!” She groaned and went back to the barricades and tried to rip them off with her bare hands. There was no way she could have ripped the barricades down. I had nailed them down too tightly.
“Maybe they went outside,” I assumed.
“And you locked them out with these stupid barricades. I know you wanted to get rid of us since day one. I know you did this for spite.” She continued trying to rip the barricades off the door but it was no use. She ran up to me and began to pound on my bare chest and continued blaming me for her missing siblings until she eventually fell on to my shoulders with streams of tears rolling down her eyes. I was so confused. I dropped the cutlass from my hand and wrapped my arms around her consoling her in her weeping state.
“I’m sure that they’re okay,” I said in an attempt to console her some more. I closed my eyes and sighed to myself, regretting what I was about to say. “Maybe I could go outside and look for them.” I knew just how dangerous going outside to look for them would have been but I couldn’t leave them out there for much longer. Without food they would surely die and turn into one of those freaks. I released my hold of her and said, “You stay here and I’ll go see if I could find them.”
She wiped the tears from her eyes then said, “I’m coming too.”
“I don’t think tha…”
“I said I’m coming too,” she repeated raising her voice a bit more.
“Okay then, let’s go.”
