The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT II: Jumbie Island]

“Get in the car!!” I shouted to Sara. She instantly complied and I followed. The bang then continued on and each one struck me with fright. The bangs then became more aggressive, turning into continuous pounding that caused huge dents in the iron gate that didn’t seem at all strong enough to withstand the force from within

When Sara and I got into the car I quickly proceeded to command everyone to put on their blindfolds right before making a 180 degree turn. My driving skills hadn’t improved much since the last time I had driven but I didn’t let my incompetence stop me from escaping. I drove through the fence knocking it down and sped off.

I drove for about a minute on an empty and quiet road but as we got closer to the exit the number of jumbies increased drastically as a host of them were making their way out of the school. I slowly drove through the group of jumbies blowing my horn to get them out of the way. They did get out of the way which was good because the last thing I wanted to do was make more of a scene.

As we drove I kept my sight on the road hoping that the jumbies wouldn’t see into my eyes while driving and for the most part they didn’t. For the most part. A couple of them looked at the car very suspiciously and one or two of them started hitting the car as we passed. More and more joined in the bombardment until the hundreds of the undead that were around us started scratching and clawing at the car. I sped up and drove away from them, crashing into some and squashing others. We were now in trouble because the jumbies were becoming more aggressive. So aggressive in fact that one of them even threw a piece of metal at the car completely shattering the back glass into a million little pieces. The metal entered the car but landed safely on the floor without injuring anyone. But that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that there was now a big gaping hole where the back window once was and a herd of jumbies were keenly following us with an intent to kill us. All of us. The other problem was that the gate to get out of the school was locked. Who locked it? I didn’t know but what I did know was that the jumbies were coming and they were coming fast.

“How many bullets do you have?” Sara asked.

I checked the rounds chamber and told her that the gun only had three more shots.

“That won’t work,” Sara said.

I looked at the jumbies coming at us and I looked at the gate then said, “We could make it work.” I aimed the gun at the gate and shot it open but before I was able to drive off the jumbies reached us and climbed onto the top of the SUV trying to get in through the broken glass. The groans changed to fiendish snarls and grew just as quickly as the screams from the blindfolded siblings in the back seat. Sara kept shouting at me to go as the dirty and rotted hands of the jumbies grabbed hold of her siblings. I smashed down onto the accelerator as hard as I could but as the car drove off a jumbie grabbed hold of Justin and pulled him out the car.

“We have to go back for him!!” Sara shouted.

I definitely agreed with her but going out to save Justin would have been putting everyone’s life at risk. It was a dilemma that I would have loved to avoid but I had to make a decision and quick. In a rush of blood I picked up the piece of metal from the car floor and went outside. The jumbies were fighting over the boy so it gave me enough time to swing a couple blows at the jumbies with the piece of metal. I couldn’t get at all but I managed to hit enough of them to be able to grab Justin and run off. We jumped into the car and quickly drove away. The hundreds of jumbies ran after us but they eventually stopped as the car sped forward out through the gate and away from the school.

“Where are we going?” Sara asked weakly. She looked really drained with her droopy eyes and pale complexion. More of the blue and purple sores seemed to have appeared all over her.

“We’re going to Valencia first then Grande. Hopefully we could find some food.”

“I hope so,” she said and drew my attention to her two brothers and sister passed out in the backseat. “They’re not sleeping. They’re dying.”

I mashed the accelerator harder causing the car to speed up.

I slowed down the vehicle as we got closer to Valencia and told Sara to put on her blindfold and to put blindfolds over her passed out siblings in the back seat.

There was a pile up of cars along the streets of Valencia but I was able to steer the car around them. Valencia didn’t have as many jumbies as Arima but there were still enough to maul us all to death so I didn’t want to take a lot of risks. I didn’t bother to put on the blindfold but I tucked my cap over my eyes. The plan was to get to the grocery store, gather food supplies and run back. I told Sara the plan then quickly ran outside with the piece of metal in my hand, ducking behind cars in order to stay out of sight.

I arrived at the grocery store, went in and started bagging up food supplies such as corn beef, macaroni, bread, peanut butter, chicken, ham, water among other foodstuffs. Some of the food had expired but food was food. There were a couple jumbies in the grocery store but nothing that a piece of metal to the head couldn’t deal with. I made a few trips to the car until I basically cleared the grocery store out. There wasn’t that much food though so the next trip was to Sangre Grande. I didn’t want to have to reenter Valencia and Sangre Grande so I tried to ensure that I cleared out all the stores with as much goods as the car could hold.
