I sprang up, grabbed my gun from the cow man and stepped back towards the door pointing my gun at the three Carnival characters. “We could make this easy for everybody,” I said over my loud gasps for breath. “Show me where the prisoners are and I might consider letting you freaks leave with your lives.” I didn’t have any intention of letting them live because I was sure they would have reported me to the Midnight Robber but I needed to get as much information from them as possible.
“You feel this is joke?” The cow man asked again.
Instead of answering the question I stood, one foot in front the other, and shot one of the blue devils dead, his body exploding into a million tiny pieces. “I’ll ask you freaks one more time.” I aimed the gun at the other blue devil. “Where are the prisoners?!” There was some venom in my voice. They didn’t answer so I shot the other blue devil. “You are the only one left. Don’t make me ask again,” I started at the cow man.
“I already dead boy,” the cow man said. “The dead not afraid to die…..Shoot me.”
“Where are the prisoners?!” I shouted.
“SHOOT ME!” The cow man exclaimed, spewing thick spit. He then picked up one of the pitchforks left by the blue devils.
“Put that down!” I shouted.
“See you soon my boy. Death is never far away for people like allyuh. It’s only a matter of time before we both share the same fate,” the cow man said before ramming the pitchfork through his stomach. Blood oozed out from the wound and dripped down from his mouth. After a few seconds of gagging and groaning in his self-afflicted despair he dropped to the floor with a thud. He was dead.
“Stupid cow,” I breathed out faintly.
I searched through the lab until I found the four prisoners huddled together in a little jail cell. I told them to stand back and I blasted the cell open and led them to the front entrance of the lab. On our way there, the biggest of the four prisoners asked me what my name was, but I simply responded that there was no time for introductions as I soldiered on. I wasn’t sure what the time was but it was getting dark and I didn’t have any shades nor did the prisoners. If spotted, the jumbies would maul us without a moment’s notice.
I peeked through the window of the lab and it was already pitch dark outside and amidst the night I clearly saw a group of jumbies walking aimlessly throughout the school. The groans were loud and it echoed through the walls of the lab. The biggest one of the prisoners comforted the others who looked not only scared but also weak and tired.
“My name is Sara-Lee by the way. Sara for short,” the biggest one said. “And these are my siblings Clive, Justin and Saraya.”
“Good to know,” I said while I was pacing up and down the room trying to come up with a plan.
“Can you stop pacing please? You’re making my siblings nervous,” Sara said.
“I don’t see you coming up with a plan,” I said, still pacing.
“It don’t matter. We’re dead anyway,” Sara said almost too nonchalant and relaxed.
“Thanks for spreading the positivity. I really appreciate it,” I said sarcastically.
“They’re smart. They will realize that we are in here,” Sara said. “They’re all around so it’s only a matter of time before-”
“Just don’t make eye contact.”
“They…..” Sara started before I rudely interrupted her.
“Shut up!” I spat. “I’m trying to come up with a plan to save your lives. The least you could do is back me up. Other than that, just stay quiet.”
“We were safe before,” Sara said in an annoyingly calm tone that just pissed me off more.
“Safe with them?” I asked.
Sara walked closer to me then showed me a blue and purple sore that was on the backside of her arms. “This wasn’t here ten minutes ago.”
“So — so what does that mean?” I asked in reference to the sore.
“It means that if we don’t get proper treatment soon, we will change into one of them,” she responded.
