The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT I: Mas]

“Silence!” the Midnight Robber shouted. “It was the government that killed these people, not me at all. I simply gave these people back their life. I gave them back their freedom that was kept from them for so long. I do these people a favor. Am I wrong? Am I wrong for wanting the best for my fellow Twin Republicans? Am I wrong for wanting the government to care about we? Am I wrong?! Do I deserve to rot in hell for what I do? If the government had cared, they would have never let me do this. Never in a million years! All I want to see is the dream of the great Dr. Eric Williams come true. Up to today, hundreds of years later, the man’s dream hasn’t come true. Madness!! That is exactly why we do this. Because if we do this, we will build a nation which can hold its head high and be accepted anywhere in the world and which any other nation will be glad to welcome as a friend. This is why we do this. This is why we do what we do. This is why these people had to die. These people did not die in vain. They died for their country. Their deaths mark the beginning of a revolution! The beginning of new life!”

The Masqueraders cheered!!

“Silence!” The Midnight Robber shouted. “These people were good people, but their thoughts were thwarted, and their actions were manipulated by the frivolous government. But that will be no more. We will continue to free these people from their misery, and we won’t stop till the government acknowledges their ways, get off their high horses and face us in person. They will….”

Suddenly my fitness watch rang out. “Stress Levels High! Stress Levels High! Please Relax! Please Relax!” It seemed like a million decibels as the computerized voice from my fitness watch echoed throughout. They all turned in my direction, and I was convinced that they saw me. I quickly went back down, taking my fitness watch from my wrist in the process. My heart stopped for a second as the place became silent. I didn’t know what was happening, but frankly, I didn’t want to know. The silence continued for a while, but then I heard some unamplified chatter and then the sound of an engine starting, and as it did, the sound of sweet Calypso blasted out of the speakers. Some really funny and menacing laughter bellowed out to the rhythm of the beat. Then the lyrics of the Calypso began, and I couldn’t help but hear them. The song started:

Tribal Sounds:

Whoday Whoday oh oh

Whoday Whoday oh oh

Spoken:

This is a story, ladies and gentlemen, about two lovely white women

Traveling all the way to Africa

Found themselves deep in the heart of the Baluba

In the congo

In the hands of my big brother Umba

and if is me, ah would ah taken them back to their husband

But brother was hungry, hungry, hungry!

Sung:

Two white women traveling through Africa

Find themselves in the hands of a cannibal headhunter

He cook up one, he eat one raw

They taste so good he wanted more, more!

He want more!

Aye yi yay

I envy the Congo man

I wish it was me ah want to shake he hand

He eat until he stomach upset, and I…

Never eat ah white meat, yet

Whoday Whoday oh oh

Whoday Whoday oh oh

The Congo Man[1] song then faded into the distance. There was complete silence, and I assumed it was safe to emerge. I raised my head, but right next to the vehicle, a Blue Devil stood with his pitchfork in hand. He drooled a blood-red substance that tainted his blue skin with red stains. I instantly dropped my head back down, out of sight. I looked to the right-hand side out of the window of the driver’s seat, and there was another Blue Devil with a pitchfork in hand.

“There’s a beating heart somewhere here. Find it!” One Blue Devil said to the other.

They seemed to be looking for the source of the heart rate alarm. My heart rate still beat heavily in my chest but my fit watch lay unattached to the floor, unaware of the trouble it put me in. I remained there in the vehicle, huddled on the floor for hours hoping that they didn’t find me until I eventually succumbed to my body’s tiredness.
