Chapter 14: The Judas Behavior
I drove the motor boat out of the sewer and through a huge pipe that vomited out sewage into the ocean. I was beginning to understand what the black substance that was on us when we fell from the sky was. I had no idea what the time was but the sky was dark and rain poured from it. The rain stung as it fell on us and I could have felt my skin peeling from the high levels of acid in the droplets. Megan kept complaining that she was hungry and even though I tried my best to sound comforting, I myself was starving. I hadn’t eaten or drank anything in a while and so did Megan so our energy levels were pretty low. We did get food pills from the Bookman but that didn’t seem to last very long. The sudden energy boost was waning away almost just as quickly as it came.
It took us quite a while to reach the sunken city of Port of Spain, almost three hours. I drove the speedboat in between all the old buildings through the garbage infested waters. I had no idea where I was but the goal was to get to the Red House where we could have evaluated our position. I managed to find the Red House. It wasn’t very hard to notice the building when we found it. It was the only building that had lights in the dark and flooded Port Of Spain. There was a long metal dock leading to the doorway of the Red House. I parked the speedboat in front the dock and Megan and I came off and started walking down the dock in the pouring rain. As soon as the guards saw the uniforms that we were in they opened the door granting us entry. It wasn’t really a door, it was just a glass wall that vanished into thin air. The guards led us down a narrow white corridor that looked very familiar. It looked exactly like the corridor that we were in when we were chased by the bats. The guards then led us to an elevator and told us to go up. We did and we found ourselves in a suite. Megan instantly jumped in the bathroom and I went in when she was done. There were fresh clothes in the cupboard and food in the fridge. It was definitely refreshing to have gotten all our needs supplied without even asking. It was like everybody had known exactly what we wanted.
After we finished eating Megan and I inquired from the guards about the whereabouts of the First Lady. I wanted to sleep but there was no time for that whatsoever. The fact that the First Lady was still alive was such a relief. But I was a bit suspicious. The last thing that the Midnight Robber told us was that he had a meeting with the First Lady. I would have expected there to be a bigger commotion in the Red House but everything seemed normal. Too normal. The guards gave us the directions to the First Lady’s office and we followed after. We had to walk down a lot of long narrow corridors. I realized that the bigger the buildings were, the longer the corridors were. I guess that was just a fact of life now.
While Megan and I were walking down the corridor a man fell from the ceiling a few feet in front of us. He didn’t notice us but I more than noticed him. How could I have missed that pitch black suit and big hat. It was the Midnight Robber. What was he doing in the Red House now? If I wasn’t mistaken, this was the second time he was at the Red House in the past couple of hours. I pulled Megan back to the previous corner then we hid but I kept my eye on the Midnight Robber. He entered into a room that was the exact room that the guards had directed us to. Was he going to talk to the First Lady? I wasn’t sure. When he had entered into the room Megan and I followed after him and listened to what was going on inside the room. It sounded like a conversation was going on in the room between the First Lady and the Midnight Robber.
“You do what I tell you to do?” The Midnight Robber asked the First Lady.
“Yup,” the First Lady answered. “I sealed off the entire city of San Fernando. No one can enter or leave the city.”
“Well done my child,” the Midnight Robber said. I heard footsteps in the room that seemed to be coming towards the door. I was about to grab Megan and run but then they continued talking.
“Is that all that you wanted to know?” The First Lady asked. “If so, you could have just called.”
“I like to talk to my people in person.”
“You told me that this was my last job!” The First Lady shouted angrily. “I did everything you told me to do. I gave you access to all the satellites, I told you where my husband was, I sent all the soldiers in the hovercraft in perfect range of the missiles, and I sealed off San Fernando. What more do you want from me?”
“She set we up,” I whispered to Megan.
Megan shushed me.
“Your usefulness eh expire yet,” The Midnight Robber said.
“You liar!” The First Lady screamed. “You told me….. You told me that this was my last job and that you would remove the bomb from my head after this.”
“I will remove it in time,” The Midnight Robber said.
“You always say that. I want this bomb out of my head and I want to go back to my country. Right now!!”
“America could wait. The Twin Republic eh done with you yet,” the Midnight Robber said
“You liar!” The First Lady shouted with a mix of both anger and agony.
“If you thinking of doing anything stupid just remember that bomb latched onto your brain.”
I heard footsteps that sounded like it was coming towards the door. I held Megan’s hand and pulled her with me to the corner of the wall then we hid again. I heard the door open then it closed. I peeked around the corner of the wall to see if he was coming our way but I didn’t see anyone. Where did he go? I turned to let Megan know what had happened but I didn’t see her. Where did she go? Suddenly I felt a pressure in my back that propelled me across the corridor. The power that it took to propel me so far couldn’t have possibly been human. I was really getting tired of being propelled through the air. When I got up from the ground and got back to terms with what was going on, I saw the Midnight Robber running towards me like a raging bull. I didn’t hesitate in running away from him but I hesitated in looking back. I turned left up a stairs and kept running till I burst through the door at the very top. On the other end of the door was the roof floor of the Red House that had all the fighter jets. There were a few small lights but the only light that actually lit the path was the Moonlight. I looked back and the Midnight Robber wasn’t behind me. The only idea that came to my head was to try and get into a fighter jet and fly off. Fighter Jets were so simple to fly these days as they all basically flew themselves. But before I opened the door of the jet a powdery fog infested the air. I had no idea where it was coming from but as I inhaled the powder that smelled like Baby Powder, my vision got fuzzy and I began to hear weird voices in my head. I heard people screaming in torment and begging me for help. The sounds in my head were so loud that they sounded real. The screams persisted for over a minute without relent or tire. I began to scream but I could have barely hear myself as I kept shouting, “stop!!! Get out of my head!!!” I kept shouting but the voices kept on getting louder and louder. I felt like my soul was being tormented just as the people who were screaming in my head. The screaming eventually subsided. Everything seemed to have gotten back to normal. All I saw was the hard concrete on the roof floor. I sat down on the floor and blew a sigh of relief.
“You see my mommy?” A little girl’s voice said. I had no idea where the voice was coming from but I looked frantically around to try to find the little girl. She was right behind me. She was a little girl in a long baggy nightgown. I couldn’t really tell how she looked that well. She had no face. She had no face at all. She had a head and hair on it but she had no nose, no eyes, nor a mouth. Fear gripped me. There was also something really strange about her feet. They weren’t normal feet. Her feet were backwards.
