The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT I: Mas]

Chapter 8: On The First Lady’s Doorstep

We entered the Port of Spain skies in a large hovercraft. It was so massive that it had a parking lot on it with enough space to hold a few hundred vehicles. It even had a landing pad on top that had a few fighter jets moving around. I couldn’t help but awe at the size of the hovercraft. We couldn’t have gotten on it from the ground. No, that was ridiculous. How could have a vessel so huge land on the ground? I had asked Roy James how big the hovercraft was and he told me that it was one thousand feet wide and three hundred feet high. The numbers didn’t really add up in my head because it looked much bigger. We had to reach the vessel, which hovered miles over the Caura river, with jets. It was definitely one of the coolest experiences of my life.

The vessel moved very slowly. Well it seemed to move slowly from my perspective sitting in a small room behind the cockpit with Megan. We were the only ones there. The other soldiers were somewhere around. The only time Roy James came in was to update us on the mission to find Rajiv. His small team of men wasn’t able to locate Rajiv after searching the premises multiple times and Megan didn’t take the news too well. She broke down in tears at the thought of Rajiv being killed by the Blue Devils. They had their squabbles recently but at the end of the day, he was still her boyfriend. I didn’t want to abuse any power that I may have had now that Rajiv was gone but she needed someone. She was crumbled over in tears, I placed my hand on her back and gave her a moment of silence to mourn.

“We were together for 2 years. August 15th made it 2 years.” Megan broke the silence.

I didn’t say anything or even paid much attention to what she was saying. I just sat there thinking if I should have told her about the incident between Rajiv and I back at Caura.

“He was my only boyfriend,” she said. “Some people used to call us high school sweethearts.” She smiled a little.

“Rajiv was a good guy. I could tell that he really loved you.” I hesitated for a while then continued. “You know, when we were in Caura, he attacked me with a bamboo. He was trying to kill me over you. Because he loved you. He still thought that I slept with you.”

“I’m not surprised. He’s a hothead. This is not the first time he fought over me. It had a time that we almost broke up over his anger problems. He promised me that he would stop but he apparently lied.”

I would have never thought that Rajiv had anger problems from my first impression of him. He seemed really friendly actually. If it’s one person that I thought would have had anger problems would have been Megan.

The vessel abruptly stopped, causing Megan and I to slightly jerk forward. Roy James came in the room, His shoulders were relaxed as ever and his face neutral with his right hand over the gun on his belt. He then ordered us to follow him. We followed him all the way to the very top of the vessel where the jets were. I decided to look over the railing of the landing pad and I saw clouds rallying across the sky below us. But directly below was the sunken city of Port of Spain and in the middle of it a huge red building towered high. We entered into the jet and flew downwards toward the Red House until we reached the landing pad directly on top of the building. We kept on following Roy James but he didn’t seem to be leading us anywhere.

“Where are the stairs?” I asked.

“Stairs?” Roy James laughed. “Are you living in the twenty first century or what? We don’t use stairs anymore.”

I was a bit confused and insulted because I still had stairs in my house. I really didn’t know how we were going to get into the building from the landing pad on top. He wouldn’t have us jump. That would be crazy.

“Jump!” Roy James said as he typed in coordinates on his watch.

“Jump where?” Megan asked confusingly as she looked around.

“Jump on the spot and keep straight.”

I didn’t really know what kind of magic was going to happen but I decided to do as he said. I jumped up in the air but I didn’t land on the ground where I jumped from. I fell straight into the floor. There was a flash of light then I ended up on the floor of a long corridor lined with doors. A few seconds later, Megan fell from the ceiling and landed flat on her back next to me. We both managed to land ungracefully and unsuccessfully but Roy James fell with poise on his feet.

“We really have to work on your landing,” Roy James said. “Because that was terrible.”

“How did that happen?” I asked, still shocked by the whole thing.

“Magic!” He said as he opened a large brown door that had the words “The Office Of The Prime Minister.”
