The Midnight Robber: A Novel [ACT I: Mas]

I had adrenaline on my side so I ran pretty quickly. But Rajiv had dedicated anger on his side. He wouldn’t stop chasing me. He finally caught up and threw me against a tree then punched me across the face three times. The third time he punched me a stream of blood came rushing out my mouth. He then lifted me up by my neck against the tree.

“You know how long I wanted to do this?” Rajiv said.

“Since yesterday?” I said wittingly as blood trickled down my mouth to my chin

“Me and Megan were together for 2 years and you’re here sleeping with my girl”

Rajiv was right. Megan and I did sleep together in the literal sense of the word. But we didn’t have any form of sex if that’s what he was thinking. But there was no arguing with him about that one. His mind was set and he obviously believed what he wanted to believe. I was beginning to think that he must have killed Megan. She wasn’t anywhere around. But I couldn’t do much thinking because I was running out of breath. I then swung my foot at Rajiv’s chest with all the energy I could muster, causing him to drop me. I scuffled on the forest floor trying my best to get away from Rajiv but he came back at me swinging the piece of bamboo recklessly at me. He missed everyone but he finally hit me across my head sending me to the ground in a loud scream. I screamed so loud that birds fluttered away at the sound of it. Rajiv put his big nasty foot on my face and pushed my face down into the soil.

“Your mother never tell you not to mess with other people property hmmm?” Rajiv said.

I tried my best to convince him that nothing happened between Megan and I but he refused to budge. It was obvious that he was obsessed with her. He treated her like if she was his treasure. I could imagine how betrayed he felt when he saw us cuddling on the bed. It was innocent but he didn’t know that. I was beginning to think that he was really planning on killing me the way he spoke. I stopped listening to what he was saying as he pushed my head deeper and deeper into the forest floor. Suddenly he stopped. He then began looking around in panic as if he had seen a ghost. I couldn’t figure out why he was so afraid at first but then I saw multiple movements among the trees. I couldn’t make out what they were but I just saw streaks of blue figures moving from tree to tree. A loud girlish scream then echoed throughout the forest.

“Megan!” Rajiv shouted worriedly.

Suddenly Megan came running out from the bushes towards us, “What the hell was that?” Her hair was ruffled and full of dirt and her eyes drooped. She seemed like she had no idea what was going on. She actually looked like she only just woke up.

“Jed?! You okay!” She said with surprise.

“You thought I was dead or what?” I said as I dusted myself off the ground

“No, it’s just that we had lost you on the drop,” Megan said.

“I’m good.”

We all stood right next to each other in fearful anticipation. We weren’t sure if to run or not so we remained stuck in place. The blue figures kept running in and around the trees until I finally was able to make out what they were. They were Blue Devils. I recognized them from the carnage in Arima. I knew what they were capable of.

“Run,” I whispered trying to keep our plans out of the ears of the Blue Devils.

Without much hesitation, the three of us then darted off. The Blue Devils then followed after us with their pitchforks in hand. The Blue Devils were fast and they were in numbers. About 12 of them followed after us. They chased us all the way through the forest until Rajiv tripped and fell to the ground. Megan was about to stop to help him but I quickly held her hand and pulled her along. A few of the Blue Devils stopped by him while the rest kept following us. They diligently chased us all the way to the river where we stopped. The river was long and deep and marked a dead end. There was no more more running for us, so we both stopped and turned around at the foot of the river awaiting our fate, gripped with fear. The Blue Devils closed in on us. Suddenly out of the river a group of soldiers with goggles rose up with their guns in hand. It was the Twin Republic Army Force leaping into action. They wore tight black leathery suits with a red white and black sash in accordance with the national flag plastered across their chests.

“Get down!” shouted the captain as the soldiers fired their guns causing all the Blue Devils to explode into a million pieces.

Megan and I were on the ground with our heads down. When the shooting stopped, Megan and I rose our heads up to see about ten of the soldiers standing in front of us. The captain came up to us and introduced himself. His name was Roy James.

“You okay?” Roy James asked.

We told him that we were alright and that our friend Rajiv was still in the forest with the Blue Devils. Roy James ordered his men to go search for Rajiv.

“What are you all doing here?” Roy James asked.

“We were trying to reach the Prime Minister’s office,” I answered

“From Caura River?”

“Well we didn’t know where we were,” I said.

“You all are real lucky that we got here in time. Here’s what I could do for you,” Roy James said while stroking his neatly cut beard. “I could request a meeting with the Prime Minister for you guys. But that’s the most I could do.”

“That would be nice,” I said.

“Okay then, follow me.”
