Chapter 6: Civil Unrest
I woke up early the next morning and I found myself alone on the bed with the door to the room wide open. Megan must have left it open. I washed up, brushed my teeth, and trudged into the kitchen where I saw Megan and Rajiv sitting and having breakfast on the kitchen table. Their heads were down and they weren’t talking to each other. I could have sensed the negative energy.
“You guys are up early,” I said, trying to bring some life to the room.
“Yeah, Rajiv and I decided to have breakfast together,” Megan said.
Rajiv however seemed grim as he kept his head down playing with his food. I decided to excuse myself but as I turned to leave, Rajiv said, “where’re you going friend? Stay here and eat… Friend.”
He kept stressing on the word “Friend” but I could have easily observed the sarcasm in his voice.
“Come sit down with us and eat. Or you ate too much food last night already?” Rajiv said wittingly.
“I told you already, we didn’t do anything Rajiv!” Megan shouted.
“Yeah, so you just randomly woke up on top of another man right?” Rajiv said. “You guys were just having a friendly cuddle right?”
Were we cuddling? I honestly couldn’t remember. When we fell asleep we were on separate sides of the bed but we may have probably gotten closer to each other during the night. I knew that we didn’t do anything last night and Megan knew it as well but Rajiv didn’t. I guess he was just ignorant of the situation
“She’s not lying Rajiv,” I said. “We were just playing chess and we fell asleep. That’s all.”
“See!” Megan said.
“I suppose to believe the man that’s trying to steal my girl. I knew it from the very moment you met us at that dumpster,” Rajiv said.
“Hoss, if I wanted to steal your girl I would have stolen her a long time ago,” I said without thinking.
I saw the blood from Rajiv’s body rise all the way to his head. It looked as though every single vein near his skull was ready to pop. Megan sat there shaking her head in regret. She wasn’t regretting something she had done but for what I said. It probably wasn’t the wisest thing to say. Rajiv stared me dead in the eye and I could tell that he wanted to sucker punch me right across the face.
“Guys,” Megan started before she was rudely interrupted by Rajiv
“Hush your mouth, Hoe!”
Megan’s face twisted with resentment towards Rajiv. They both started quarrelling with each other and I just looked on almost proud of myself that I caused it. I didn’t do it on purpose but they were so close to breaking up. That would have definitely given me all the chances to get Megan. Well played Jed. Well played.
They kept on quarrelling but they abruptly stopped when a loud screeching noise echoed through the air. The screeching was so unbearable that it had all of us on the floor holding on to our ears for dear life. Glass cups shattered under the intense sound. I couldn’t stand it. It was deafening. I curled myself up on the ground with my palms tightly over my ear. I screamed but I couldn’t hear the noise emptying itself from me. The sound continued on for minutes at a time stopping and starting back. Suddenly, every single piece of electronic equipment that was plugged on randomly turned itself on. The screeching noise then stopped and the only electronic device that remained on was the glass flat television on the wall. Marsha along with a strange man came running into the kitchen half naked. Marsha was decked in lingerie with pink handcuffs hanging from her right hand while the strange man just had a jockey shorts on. We all could have figured out what went down with them but it was the last thing on our minds.
What caused the loud screech?
“Everybody okay?” Marsha asked.
We all answered positively.
The television started to get louder and louder on its own accord. We all went into the living room to see what all the commotion was about. The TV automatically coming on wasn’t something strange. It usually happens when the government had to make a public announcement. No one watched television these days. Why watch television when there were computers and Augmented Reality? The technology that automatically turns the TV on was frequency based. The government usually flew over the cities with the blimp when a program was on that they wanted the people to watch and radiate a frequency that was able to turn all electronic equipment on. It was never in the form of a loud screech though. That was a first.
As we entered the living room where the television was, there was a counter counting down on the screen and when it hit zero, a recording of a segment of Dr. Eric Williams’ 1962 Independence Day speech began.
