While I was sitting there I felt a small pebble hit me in my head. After almost suffering from a panic attack I noticed that the pebble was thrown by Megan who was trying to get my attention. She was hiding behind a car a few feet in front of me with her hands over Melanie’s mouth. One of Melanie’s legs was covered in blood from a gushing wound. She must have gotten it from the blast. Megan pointed in the direction behind me and when I looked I saw the bandit slowly approaching. I could have easily gotten away by crouching around cars but if I left he would have definitely caught Megan and Melanie. I couldn’t let that happen even if it killed me. The bandit was getting closer and I needed a plan. I put my index finger on my lip signaling Megan and Melanie to stay quiet and I crouched around the car trying to stay undetected. I kept moving backward until I was behind the bandit. I didn’t have a plan but I had to come up with something quickly.
“That little girl is wounded, soldier! You have a duty to protect her and get her to safety! What do you have to do?” My father’s voice in my head said.
“Think, think, think,” I whispered to myself.
“No time for thinking soldier! The bandit is getting closer! All there is to do is act! Leave the thinking for after.” My father’s voice in my head said.
The bandit moved closer and closer to the girls but I still didn’t have a plan. Suddenly, from a rush of adrenaline, I decided to follow my father’s voice in my head and act. I quickly ran up to the bandit and jumped on his back trying my best to keep him from the girls.
“Run!” I shouted.
Megan picked up her sister who couldn’t run for herself and slowly ran off. I kept my hands around the bandit’s neck trying to keep him from firing his gun. He raised the gun to try to shoot me but I held his hand before he could have pointed it at me. The bandit kept on struggling and I kept holding on. I then mustered up enough strength to poke him in his eyes causing him to drop his gun to the floor and grab his paining eyes. I picked up the gun and then darted off. I didn’t look back but I was sure that he was following me. I kept on running and when I finally decided to look back I saw him right behind running at me and shouting some curse words. I was slowing down. I was getting tired. My back was still aching from the blast. He would have definitely caught me so there was only one other option. I abruptly stopped running, turned around, held the gun toward the bandit, and fired. The power from the shot propelled my body almost 12 feet in the air and as much as 30 feet from where I pulled the trigger. I wasn’t lucky enough to land on a vehicle this time around. I landed smack on the cold hard road. I was able to avoid hitting my head, my back absorbing the damage, compounding the already searing pain. The fall seemed to propel all the air in my lungs up my throat causing me to cough constantly. It hurt, but I was alive.
Could I say the same about the bandit?
My shot didn’t kill the bandit but it totally severed his right arm from his body. His right arm was probably somewhere in space. The place where his arm used to be was replaced by a stream of blood that gushed out from his shoulder like water falling out of a tap. The bandit kept on walking towards me almost zombie-like. Each step he took seemed to drain more and more of his life mana. He eventually fell to the ground dead before he reached me. I couldn’t believe that I killed a man. I felt like a monster but it was self-defense. Was I wrong?
“Good job, soldier!” My father’s voice in my head said.
I had the urge to just lie there on the ground for the entire night again. I fell flat on my back and just lay there until I heard the sound of police sirens. I saw a whole barrage of police hover cars flying in from San Fernando to the scene. I quickly threw the gun on the floor and ran away.
While running someone came up behind me and pulled me behind a car. It was another instance where I almost suffered a panic attack but I breathed a sigh of relief when I realized that it was Rajiv.
“Where are Megan and Melanie?” He asked.
“I don’t know, last time I saw them, I told them to run. I see Melanie has a big bruise on her leg,” I responded out of breath. “I don’t think they got too far.”
“Well let’s try to find them,” Rajiv said. “You good?”
“I am a little beaten up, but you should see the other guy,” I said.
“Good,” Rajiv said.
Rajiv and I searched all over for Megan and Melanie until we were finally able to find them hiding behind a vehicle. We quickly dusted ourselves off, caught our breath, and continued our trek along the San Fernando Entrance. We didn’t know where Ray Carter was and Melanie was being quite stubborn about it, but we couldn’t go back to look for him. It was too dangerous.
The further along the bridge we walked, the higher the water around the bridge rose and the more buildings were spotted. There were also some hills poking out of the water along with the buildings. We arrived at the dock and we just stood there waiting on the next ferry to the Capital.
