A gritty prequel for the highly-acclaimed 'The Sopranos' is coming to theaters and home screens this October.
'The Sopranos' premiered in 1999 on premium cable network HBO and was a huge success. Many critics have hailed the show "as the greatest and most groundbreaking television series of all time." 'The Sopranos' tells the story of the legendary Tony Soprano (played by James Gandolfini), the New Jersey-based Italian-American mobster caught between balancing his family life and being the leader of a notorious criminal group. After airing for six seasons, the series finally concluded in 2007. However, many fans continue to adore the show up to this date.
The good news is they will get to see more of Tony in the upcoming prequel movie, 'The Many Saints of Newark (A Sopranos Story)'.
The prequel will be exploring the teenage life of the legendary Tony Soprano and will be played by no other than Gandolfini's son, Michael! Michael's casting is a heartwarming homage to his father's incredible acting performance.
Here is everything you need to know about 'The Many Saints of Newark', including release date, plot, cast, trailer, and more.
'The Many Saints of Newark' will release in theaters on October 1, 2021. It will also have a month-long simultaneous release on the HBO Max.
The film's arrival is long overdue. 'The Many Saints of Newark' was supposed to release on September 25, 2020, but was delayed multiple times due to the pandemic.
The prequel film will follow the ruthless crime family headed by Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini).
It's set several decades before the events of the HBO series and will introduce us to a teenage Tony, who grew up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark's history.
The film will explore how he became the ruthless criminal we've come to know, rising above the rival DiMeo crime family and several other organizations. Tony’s uncle Dickie will also play a significant part in molding Tony into a powerful mob boss.
Teenage Tony may have been performing poorly at school, but the faculty finds out that he is exceptionally gifted with wit and leadership skills. Under Dickie's influence, Tony becomes a player in the dangerous world and slowly rises in the echelons of the brutal society.
Several 'The Sopranos' characters are returning. But since the film is set a few decades back, these characters are portrayed by a younger cast.
James Gandolfini portrayed Tony Soprano in the series. Unfortunately, the actor passed away in 2013. The role is passed on to his son Michael (Ocean’s 8).
In an interview with Esquire, Michael opened up regarding the challenges he had to overcome when he finally decided to step into his father's shoes.
“The funny thing is, before the audition, I had never watched a minute of The Sopranos. I was just a kid when he was making it," Michael said.
"I would go to the set and ask him what it was about, and he’d say, ‘Oh, it’s about this guy who’s in the mob and kind of goes to therapy.’ The hardest part of this whole process was watching the show for the first time.”
“It was an intense process. Because, as an actor, I had to watch this guy who created the role, to look for mannerisms, voice, all those things I would have to echo. But then I’d also be seeing my father. I think what made it so hard was I had to do it alone. I was just sitting alone in my dark apartment, watching my dad all the time. I started having crazy dreams. I had one where I auditioned for David, and I looked down at my hands, and they were my dad’s hands.”
Michael will be joined by The Conjuring's Vera Farmiga, who will star as Tony's mother. Alessandro Nivola (Black Narcissus) is also on board as Tony's uncle, Dickie Moltisanti.
The rest of 'The Sopranos' characters who will appear in the film are:
Giovanni ‘Johnny Boy’ Soprano (played by The Punisher‘s Jon Bernthal),
Junior Soprano (played by House of Cards star Corey Stoll),
To complete the cast list, we have 'One Night in Miami' star Leslie Odom Jr., 'Marriage Story' star Ray Liotta, 'Maron' star Joey Diaz, and 'Green Book' star Nick Vallelonga.
