It has been five years since the original movie came out and the American remake is now finally coming.
The Korean zombie-apocalypse movie Train to Busan was a huge hit and took the world by storm. The movie starring Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-Seok, Kim Su-an, Choi Woo-Shik, Ahn So-hee, and Kim Eui-sung premiered in 2016. It was not only well-received in Korea, but people all over the world were captivated by the film.
The story was unique in the sense that we see the story unfold on board a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan as a zombie apocalypse suddenly breaks out in the country. The movie played a huge role in the Korean wave further putting Korean-made media on the world map. With the success of the movie, there was talk about a Hollywood remake. It has been five years since the original movie came out and the American remake is now on its way to see the light of day soon. The film is titled The Last Train to New York and will have huge shoes to fill.
Here's everything you need to know about it.
The film will have the same premise as the South Korean film. In the original film, the story follows Seo Seok-woo (Gong Yoo), a cynical workaholic and divorced father. He has to take his daughter to her mother's place for her birthday. They decide to take the train to Busan when there is a zombie virus breakout in the country. The passengers of the train also get affected by it and have to find a way to survive as they try to find help and life in the outside world.
We can expect to see a similar action-packed adventure in the American remake as well even though details of the plot have not been disclosed currently. The New York City Subway is one of the world's oldest public transit systems, one of the most-used which would make a great setting for the story to unfold.
As of now, there has been no indication about whom we can expect to take on the role that has become iconic thanks to Gong Yoo. What we do know, however, is that the film will be directed by Timo Tjahjanto who is best known for his works on the horror and action genres. Gary Dauberman, known for writing some of The Conjuring Universe horror films, will be the writer of the film. James Wan is set to produce the project along with New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, and Coin Operated co-producing with Warner Bros, as per Collider.
The film is set to hit theaters on April 21, 2023. Warner Bros. will be the worldwide distributor.
