Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale is often considered to be a literary masterpiece, the Hulu adaptation has garnered a very loyal fanbase and here's everything we know about the final season of The Handmaid's Tale.
Everything has a beginning and an ending; sadly, that's also applicable to The Handmaid's Tale! Ahead of the latest season's arrival, it was announced that that show would return for the 6th and final season, which will wrap up June's story in a way fans have been waiting for. "It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and the chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale," said creator, showrunner, and executive producer Bruce Miller in a statement at the time of season 5 release.
The Handmaid's Tale maintained a one-year gap between seasons until the pandemic arrived and threw them off that schedule. Now, they have a two-year gap between seasons and looking at the current plan, we think that the last season will arrive in early 2024. However, we are still waiting on an official release date.
According to an interview conducted by Digital Spy, Showrunner Bruce Miller said that the book's ending is pretty "infuriating." Then he went on to talk about June's character arc, "We have so many women through history who didn't have names, who were never identified. They were there for a while. They told their story, and this is The Handmaid's Tale – she told it. And then they disappear, faceless, into the mist of history. And that's what the problem is: there are too many women out there who are just Offred and are just the Handmaids.
"But that's the story we're telling. To make it, this story starts when that kid is taken from her. And that's when she turns into a Handmaid. And it ends when she disappears off of our radar. But she doesn't disappear from the world. She's a real human woman. Just because she's not on our radar doesn't mean she doesn't exist."
It also feels that Nick and June have some business they need to finish, so fans are looking forward to that. The same was confirmed by the showrunner with Entertainment Weekly, he said that this is going to be the most romantic season in the show's history.
The Handmaid's tale will definitely see the return of the main characters. The cast includes Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford, Madeline Brewer as Janine, O-T Fagbenle as Luke, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, Max Minghella as Nick, Samira Wiley as Moira, Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence, Amanda Brugel as Rita.
