The Eternals will make history by featuring the first gay kiss in the MCU.
It's official! The first gay kiss to be featured in a Marvel movie will be in The Eternals. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke about the character Phastos, played by Brian Tyree Henry saying: “He’s married, he’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is.”
In the film, Haaz Sleiman plays the husband of Phastos and he spoke about the relationship between the two characters and their iconic kiss scene to NewNowNext. He said:
It’s a beautiful, very moving kiss. Everyone cried on set. For me, it’s very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be. Brian Tyree Henry is such a tremendous actor and brought so much beauty into this part, and at one point I saw a child in his eyes, and I think it’s important for the world to be reminded that we in the queer community were all children at one point. We forget that because we’re always depicted as sexual or rebellious; we forget to connect on that human part.
I’m married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, and we represent a gay family and have a child.
The world will definitely have mix feelings about this new development. Will this affect the box office figures of the film. Most likely not. Hardcore fans of the MCU will still go out and watch it whether there is a gay kiss or not. What affects box office figures, as proven by Birds Of Prey, is the toxic social justice warrior attitudes where ideals are forced on to the viewers constantly.
The Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 6th, 2020. It is directed by Chloé Zhao and stars Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Angelina Jolie, and Kit Harington.
