There is no way fans can let go of the scriptwriter just like that, without knowing what exactly happened to James in the first season. Here's all we know!
'The End of the F***ing World' is getting another season and fans are super excited for it. The first season of 'The End of the F***ing World' garnered heavy appreciation and performed extremely well. The series first aired on Channel 4 in the UK in late 2017, and soon was picked up by Netflix, which was then aired in January 2018. The first part was the story of a self-professed teenage serial killer, James, who targetted Alyssa as his first potential victim. Some unavoidable circumstances led them on an impromptu road trip, which soon turned out to be a crime-filled escape from the law.
The first season of 'The End of the F***ing World' comprises of only eight, short episodes and the season ended with a shocking finale that leaves fans speculating about James' fate, which is why a second season is the most awaited one now. For those who don't know 'The End of the F***ing World' originally is based on a graphic novel of the same name by creator Charles Forsman. So, let's try to collect everything we know about season 2, starting with:
Well, you doubt that? There is no way fans can let go of the scriptwriter just like that, without knowing what exactly happened to James in the first season. In August 2018, the show tweeted a clip of Season 1's dramatic final scene, with a caption "We'll be f***ing back." Not just that, the head of dramatic programming at Channel 4, Beth Willis, told Deadline, "We're so proud that this global success story began at Channel 4 and that a second series is on its way. [Writer Charlie Covell's] witty, wonderful world is back and we can't wait to see where she takes it next."
The Director of Programmes at Channel 4, Ian Katz also shared his joy by saying, “Lurching between black and joyous, The End of The F***ing World was one of the most original and beguiling pieces of drama to emerge from Britain in years. I’m so proud that Channel 4 brought it to the screen and beyond excited that Charlie and the brilliant team at Clerkenwell are giving us a second helping.” So definitely, season 2 is happening!
We haven't heard anything official about the release date so far, but one thing that we know about the next installment is that- it will hit Channel 4 first, as this time the ownership of the 'The End of the F***ing World' will be taken into consideration more seriously, as not many fans know that 'The End of the F***ing World' first premiered on Channel 4 in October 2017 and soon hit their digital service All 4 before it reached Netflix in January 2018. The second installment might work differently. It is so because the content chief, Ian Katz wants the series to be known as a Channel 4 production and not a Netflix show. He said, "Next time we'll run the whole series on the channel then there will be a conventional hold back of more than a year before people see it on Netflix," said Katz. "It really bugs me that people think that the show is a Netflix show, I really want to reclaim ownership of it, it’s absolutely a Channel 4 show."
Fans can hope for the second installment to hit Netflix soon, and going with what was reported in RadioTimes, the series will of course first hit Channel 4 in late 2019, and then we can hope for the sequel to be aired on Netflix- mostly in 2020. The wait can be a little longer, but it is surely going to be worth it.
Looking at how the first season ended, expecting 'The End of the F***ing World' without the lead characters- Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden will mess up fans, therefore, we can put dibs on their reprise as James and Alyssa for sure. However, who else to expect in the reprise is a little hard to say. Keeping aside the core cast, according to Deadline, Charlie Covell, the one who wrote the first season is ready to write the next season along with executive produce this time with Andy Baker, Dominic Buchanan, Jonathan Entwistle, and Ed Macdonald.
Well, yes of course! And, this news was confirmed by Netflix and Jessica Barden who posted on social media in early March 2019 that the upcoming season's production has begun. The picture that was shared has Barden as Alyssa, and another picture that surfaced was the cover of her Season 2, Episode 1 script. Going with what we can find from the cover, the shooting is more likely to have started in early 2019, as it says January 3. Ever since the news of season 2's production has gone viral, the crew has been spotted filming around Wales, both at a bridal shop in the city of Swansea and in the wooded locale of the Forest of Dean. Jessica was reportedly spotted wearing a wedding gown on the sets of 'The End of the F***ing World', which might mean that two messed up kids have taken their spontaneity to the next level by getting hitched. Anything could happen actually, looking at the uncertainty of James character.
The first installment of the series is directly adapted from Charles S. Forsman's graphic novel that puts an end to James' life. However, the TV adaptation left fans wondering about Jame's fate, which means that the opening scene of season 2 will start from where it ended. Another thing we can expect in the second installment could be the legal bind that James and Alyssa are now in, considering the fact that the young teenagers have a murder case hanging over their head, their case might have become a high profile one.
Or, maybe James really did die and fans might see him in the form of flashbacks. Though that seems unlikely as showrunner, Jonathan Entwistle said that if the story continues then for him it is going to be about James and Alyssa. He said, "I think that's what people have connected with. I think a Season 2 would have to involve James and Alyssa somehow. I just love the world of them out there on the road, doing something in a weird world. So for me, any story that we expand keeps them out there somewhere."
