Who doesn't love a good political drama? Netflix has been dipping its toes into the political drama realm with shows like The Crown, Designated Survivor and House of Cards, to name a few. Now we've got a new "PD" on the block. The Diplomat is Netflix's newest political drama. It was released on April 20th, 2023 and really sparked the interest of many subscribers with high stakes and highly engaging plot. The show was created and produced by Debora Cahn. The plot reads:
In the midst of an international crisis, Kate Wyler a career diplomat lands in a high-profile job for which she was not suited, with tectonic implications for her marriage and her political future.

'The Diplomat' has not been renewed for season 2 as of this writing. But the show is still very new, only premiering on April 20th, 2023. There is still not a lot of data for Netflix to review in terms of viewing statistics. Netflix needs atleast a month of data before even considering the show for another season. Some shows get instant renewals because the data was so good in the first few days. This doesn't seem to be the case with 'The Diplomat'. If 'The Diplomat' gets renewed for season 2 we expect the original cast to all reprise their roles. These include Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Rory Kinnear, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, Miguel Sandoval, Celia Imrie, and T'Nia Miller.
The first season ended quite explosively. Right after Ambassador Kate Wyler and Austin Dennison relayed the news that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge was responsible for the attack on the HMS Courageous, and that he hired the Russian Lenkov Group to kill his own countrymen, a bomb goes off in the car of Tory MP Merritt Grove. Main characters Hal, Stuart, Ronnie, and Merritt are all within range of the blast, and their states are currently unknown as the season ends right after Kate gets the news. Season 2 will definitly continue on with the aftermath of the bomb and the conditions of the characters caught in the blast.
'The Diplomat' has not been renewed yet so a release date is currently uncertain. But we will update this space as new information comes in. The first season was greenlit in January 2022 and it premiered 15 months later. So if the show gets renewed within the next few months, we can expect a 2024 release date.
