Thirty-seven years after the original movie by Jim Henson, Netflix released a 10-episode prequel titled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which received universal acclaim from both fans and critics alike. Such an overwhelmingly positive response from the show is deserving of a second season, is it not? But will we be getting a new season? Let’s explore.
Is The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Season 2 Happening?
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has been canceled after only one season. There was hope for the show to return for season 2 when the co-creator of the series, Jeffrey Addiss, said, “We also have a concrete document for season two. So we are ready to go.”
The other co-creator chimed in on the matter by saying:
“If we are lucky enough to get more seasons, then the story will go on, and we know where it’s going, and it’s maybe more hopeful than you might think.”
However, hope was shattered when Netflix broke its silence in September 2020 and announced that the show was canceled.
Lisa Henson, the show’s producer, made a statement regarding the cancellation. She said:
“We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of The Dark Crystal saga concludes, and we’ll look for ways to tell that story in the future. Our company has a legacy of creating rich and complex worlds that require technical innovation, artistic excellence, and masterful storytelling. Our history also includes productions that are enduring, often finding and growing their audience over time and proving again and again that fantasy and science fiction genres reflect eternal messages and truths that are always relevant. We are so grateful to Netflix for trusting us to realize this ambitious series; we are deeply proud of our work on Age of Resistance, and the acclaim it has received from fans, critics, and our peers, most recently receiving an Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program.”
What Could Have Happened In The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance Season 2?
Warning! Major Spoilers Ahead!
From the first season, it looks as if the Geflings are in for it. They might have emerged as victors from their Stone in Wood battle, but they have yet to win the war against the Skesis. And by the end of the first season, the war quickly ruled in favor of the Skesis thanks to the Scientist’s weapon. This insane weapon was called the Garthim, which received its power from the eponymous dark crystal. This creation is a hideous amalgamation of the corpses of the Gruneks and Arathim that were grossly pieced together. This creation is what led to an event called the “Garthim War.” From the looks of it, the Garthim will serve as the very tool that will lead the Skesis to their imminent triumph over the Gelflings and eventually steal their essence.
The second season is expected to have Rian, Brea, and Deet resume their adventures from where they left off in the first season as the Henson team continues to expand the world of Thra, where new characters get introduced in the battle between the Skesis and the Gefling. But if you really want to know which way the show is going, you’d probably want to pick up the young adult Dark Crystal series that begins with Shadows of the Dark Crystal, which heavily influenced the first season (if not an accurate adaptation). We’re almost certain that you’ll find the answers to where the lore of season 2 is going to be based.
Co-executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach told io9:
“The YA novels sort of began to set a lot of that template for the kind of flower of Gelfling civilization being in full bloom.”
“We have seven kinds of Gelfling in this TV show, so you’re seeing an entire spectrum of civilization. You’re seeing a planet that is developed that has societies that have different racial groups, different divisions between different species, and stuff like that.”
The second season would have probably explored the Darkening to a greater depth right after season one concluded.
Grillo-Marxuach had this to say:
“One of the big ecological parables of this show is that you have a system that has suffered the insult of having the Skeksis put into it. The Skeksis are not of Thra. They came from another galaxy, perhaps, we don’t know.”
