The series follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities. The first season premiered in 2019 followed by the second in 2020. It was renewed for a third season which is set to premiere later this year, on June 3, 2022. The trailer for the new season just dropped and has been causing quite the stir.

For those who don't know, The Boys goes all in with the violence, gore, and other heavy subjects and the audience seemed to appreciate the showrunners' approach to the same. The third season will deal with the Herogasm arc from the original comics which is centered around superhero orgy festivals. It is considered one of the most risqué moments from the comics. Ennis and Robertson envisioned it as a crossover event to bring together the various teams of superheroes from their standalone comics banding together to take on a larger threat, as per Entertainment Weekly. Considering this, not even the biggest fans were prepared for the trailer.

The trailer was released on March 12 with the Redband teaser. It is called The Boys Presents: Diabolical, a collection of eight wild and shocking animated shorts set in the world of The Boys. The trailer gives us a glimpse of the chaos that awaits in the third season featuring an ensemble of stars including Karl Urban as William "Billy" Butcher, Laz Alonso as Marvin T. "Mother's" Milk, Jack Quaid as Hugh "Hughie" Campbell Jr, Jessie T. Usher as Reggie Franklin / A-Train, Antony Starr as John / Homelander, and Chace Crawford as Kevin Moskowitz / The Deep.

The trailer shows the violence we have come to expect from the show. Apart from the exploding bodies, another particularly shocking instance in the trailer would be the moment when Hughie's face is vomited on by Butcher. The graphic content was too much to handle for many viewers and the official The Boys social media accounts had to address the backlash. The trailer has apparently been flagged or reported for its content over 20 million times. The show's account tweeted: "Everyone's raving that the Season 3 is 'deeply unhinged' and asking 'what the f*** did we just watch?'" They even shared a screen capture of Karl Urban sipping tea like the popular Kermit meme along with an unofficial infographic detailing the reaction to the trailer.

Those who have loved the show so far may just enjoy the next season as well since Quaid has claimed this has been his favorite season yet. "I'm very biased obviously, but it's a season that's even more messed up than the ones we've done so far," he said as per Comic Book. "There's a lot of those signature messed up Boys' moments. I think we tackle a lot of new territories." As for the infamous trailer, you can watch it here:
