With a primary focus on Netflix’s U.S. slate, the global Next on Netflix event brought a plethora of date announcements, title reveals, and first-look previews. However, a number of revelations about impending 2025 releases were revealed at the event, which took place in 12 different places throughout the globe, including Mexico. Among the announcements was the renewal of The Accident, which is returning for a second season (known as Accidente in Spanish-speaking territories).
The ten-episode series, which debuted on Netflix in August 2024 and stars Alberto Guerra, Sebastian Martínez, Erik Hayser, Macarena García, and Ana Claudia Talancón, tells the story of a birthday party that takes a tragic turn when a bouncy castle full of kids flies away, upsetting the local community.
On January 29th, a live presentation revealed the news of a second season. Carolina Leconte, vice president of content, announced Mexico’s next slate of films and affirmed that the thriller will certainly be coming back. Speaking about the upcoming slate, Leconte said, “Our commitment is to continue offering authentic stories so that our Mexican members identify with them and see more Mexican realities reflected.”
As previously said, the show was a notable success in Mexico and may have been the nation’s largest hit to date, at least in terms of being a worldwide smash. The series spent seven weeks in the global top 10s due to its peculiar premise and social media success, particularly on TikTok. It received 268.50 million hours of viewing during those seven weeks, which is equivalent to roughly 36.40 million views.
The show was in the top 10 in 86 nations overall, with the best performances coming from Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Venezuela.
In the end, opinions regarding the show were split between viewers and critics, despite its success. IMDb has only given it a 5.7 rating, with some reviews describing it as “dumb,” “over-the-top nonsense,” or “flat-out bad.”
