That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is coming back for a second season, and if you haven't been watching, this is as good a time as any to start on it!
When you hear the word "Slime," if you're a gamer, you think about the Dragon Quest series of games. This particular anime isn't too far off-base in that case. Season 1 of this Isekai anime premiered in October 2018. Because of the length of the title, it's been fondly shortened to Slime Isekai or TenSura. The series is unique in how it develops its characters and is a breath of fresh air for the Isekai genre. For those of us who avidly followed the first 24 episodes, we're just waiting to see where things go in season 2. For those new to the series, I figure a synopsis is to get you up to speed.
Satoru Mikami is like every other corporate grunt working in Tokyo, his life a monotonous string of going to the office and coming back home. He doesn't even have a girlfriend to show for it. However, in the one adventurous point in his life, he's stabbed by a random assailant while hanging out with a colleague and dies. That's not the end of our story, however, but just the beginning. While unconscious, Satoru follows a set of instructions that end with him waking up without arms or legs, or any appendages whatsoever. He's been transformed into a slime, like those you're likely to encounter in a game like DragonQuest. A few moments in the world leads him to the realization that he's not in Tokyo anymore.
After a cursory exploration of his surroundings, he starts to realize that a few things have changed. First, he now has the power to devour things and gain their shape and abilities. Secondly, there's a massive, dangerous monster called Veldora, a Storm Dragon, who was sealed away for hundreds of years for daring to destroy a village. Taking pity on Veldora, Satoru, in his new form as a slime, promises to break the seal that releases the dragon into the world. Veldora thanks him and rechristens him Rimuru Tempest to give him divine protection.
This question is loaded. In season 1, we were privy to a lot of things that didn't see resolution, leaving us to think that they'll either be expanded upon or wholly resolved in season 2. Since we're not sure where the anime intends to go, we don't really have a path that we can plot out like other Isekai. That makes it both thrilling and exciting. Chances are we'll get a recap to catch up with what's been happening up to now. We expect to see Tempest come under attack putting Rimuru in a precarious situation. He may have to sacrifice something to save it. Alternatively, he might need to go gather his own band of brave heroes to defend Tempest. At the moment, we're not too sure which direction it's going to go. Details coming out about season 2 have been notably sparse, building up the hype even more for when it eventually drops.
If you're a fan of Isekai, this is a pretty cool twist on the standard genre. While Satoru isn't that much of a great protagonist as a human, as a slime, Rimuru is actually quite endearing. Even if Isekai isn't your genre of film and you have fond memories of the Dragon Quest series, this might be an excellent opportunity to check out an anime that will surprise you with its characters and depth.
There's no exact release date for season 2 of this series just yet, but the scheduled premiere date for season 2 is sometime in October of 2020. You have more than enough time to catch up on season 1 before then.Disclaimer : The views expressed in this article belong to the writer and are not necessarily shared by trinikid.com
