'Sweet Tooth' season 1 only touched the beginning of Jeff Lemire's DC/Vertigo comic. After leaving with numerous cliffhangers, will 'Sweet Tooth' return for season 2?
Netflix struck gold when it decided to snatch 'Sweet Tooth' from Hulu. The fantasy series based on Jeff Lemire's comic book of the same name is a massive hit worldwide! It continues to dominate the streamer's Top spot in different territories since its release on June 4, 2021.
'Sweet Tooth' tells the story of Gus, a half-human and half-deer hybrid. He is raised by his Pubba in the depths of the forest, away from anyone who could hurt him.
The series takes place following the Great Crumble, a time when a deadly virus wiped out a big part of the human population and led to the birth of the hybrids.
The first season left with a nail-biting cliffhanger. So does that mean we can expect Sweet Tooth season 2 to return? Here is what we know.
There is no official renewal announcement from Netflix yet, but we are confident that we will see 'Sweet Tooth' and the rest of the hybrids again. Unlike 'Jupiter's Legacy,' 'Sweet Tooth' has received a lot of favorable reviews.
The series has dominated the number one spot in Netflix's top 10 across different territories. Its charm and optimism proved to be very captivating, both for the young and adult audiences. The special effects are top-notch, and the hybrids are incredibly cute, it's impossible to resist them. As of this writing, Sweet Tooth has an amazing 98% critic score and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics called it "emotionally engaging, superbly acted, and incredibly entertaining." Hence, all the signs seem to point that another season will most likely happen. Netflix often takes at least a month before renewing a show. If we are lucky, we could get a renewal announcement by July.
It's a shot in the dark for now. We are still waiting for the show to get renewed for season 2. When that happens, the series will still have to enter production and post-production.
The entire process could take a year or more. Showrunner Jim Mickle has landed another big project. He will be directing the film adaptation of Donny Cates’ acclaimed graphic novel 'God Country.' Hopefully, this will not hinder the production for 'Sweet Tooth' should it get renewed for season 2.
Warning: Season 1 Spoilers ahead.
The Netflix series deviated from the comics, so it's safer to assume what will happen in season 2 based on where season 1 left off.
'Sweet Tooth' season 1 ended on a solemn note, but there is a glimmer of hope waiting on the horizon.
The Last Men caught Gus and the rest of the hybrids hiding from the preserve. However, their capture brought some positivity into Gus' life and the hybrid kids in general. For the first time, he has finally got to see another hybrid. He met Bobby, Wendy, and the rest of the hybrids, from Aimee's preserve. The hybrid kids hugged each other in the dark cell. After years of living in fear, they finally get to find strength in each other.
Meanwhile, Jepp the Big Man almost died after he gets shot when General Abbot and his men captured Gus. Luckily, he was found and nursed back to health by Aimee Eden.
Aimee has stayed up all night to plan the rescue of the hybrids. With the Big Man on her side, they have a better chance to save the children.
The biggest surprise of the season is that Birdie is alive! Bear managed to call Birdie's satellite phone, and she answered on the other line. It looks like Birdie is back in Alaska, searching for the cure to the virus that she and her laboratory seemingly released, causing the Great Crumble and the birth of the hybrids. The two will likely collaborate to save Gus and the rest of the hybrids in season 2.
Meanwhile, Dr. Singh is facing an enormous moral dilemma. He does not want to hurt the hybrids, but it is the only way to create a cure for his deteriorating wife and those affected by The Sick. The constant pressure from General Abbot is pushing him even further in the dark path.
There are still so many questions unanswered when season 1 is finished, and hopefully, season 2 will give us the revelations we need.
What is the connection between the virus that caused The Sick and the birth of the hybrids? Will Birdie and Gus finally meet? Most importantly, will the hybrid children find a safe place to thrive?
There is no official renewal and casting announcement so far, but if the show gets greenlit for another season, we expect the following characters to return.
Christian Convery will likely return as Gus, the half-human, half-deer hybrid lovingly referred to by Jepp as "Sweet Tooth".
Nonso Anozie will likely reprise his role as Tommy Jepperd, a lone ranger and reformed Last Man, who saves Gus from poachers. The former professional football player has developed a close bond with Gus during their trip to Colorado.
The rest of the cast members who are likely to return are Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Aditya Singh, Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear, Dania Ramirez as Aimee Eden, Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh, Naledi Murray as Wendy, and Amy Seimetz as Birdie.
Neil Sandilands is also likely to come back as General Abbot, the nefarious leader of The Last Men.
Will Forte's Pubba is also likely to return to guide Gus through flashbacks. Pubba died early, but his character appeared through flashbacks and dreams throughout the season.
Not yet. We are still waiting for 'Sweet Tooth' to get renewed for season 2. After that, the series will still have to undergo production and editing. Here is the season 1 trailer in the meantime. We will update this article once the show gets officially renewed. Haven't seen 'Sweet Tooth' yet? Don't miss out on this magical series. Stream 'Sweet Tooth' on Netflix now!
