'Squid Game' Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Squid Game has everyone hooked and people have been hoping there would be another season, of what is being dubbed as Korea's 'Hunger Games.'

Squid Game Season 2

The thrilling Korean drama Squid Game has created quite the buzz. The series is about how a group of people, hard strapped for cash, get selected to play a bunch of children's games for what seems like easy money to the tune of ₩45.6 billion (US$38.5 million.) But there is nothing easy about the games as they take on a deadly turn with a lot more at stake. The show made it to the number-one spot on Netflix. If you have watched and liked the Japanese show Battle Royale, about schoolkids being sent to a deserted island to fight to the death, you may also like Squid Game. The show has become a huge hit already and is definitely one not to miss. No sooner had the first season been released on Netflix, people have been hoping there would be another season of what is being dubbed as Korea's Hunger Games. There are only nine episodes, and those who probably binge-watched it would find it unbearable that the series ended with a cliffhanger. So, here's all you need to know about season 2.

Will There Be A Second Season Of Squid Game?

Yes, season 2 is happening. In June 2022, Netflix greenlit the hit Korean season for another season. In November 2021, Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that new episodes had been ordered. He told Associated Press:

"There's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently. But I do think it's too early to say when and how that's going to happen. So I will promise you this…(in English) Gi-Hun will come back, and he will do something for the world."

Hwang Dong-hyuk first conceived the idea for the show way back in 2008. The series was slated for release in 2019 and was called Round Six. “I’m already thrilled at the prospect of introducing Round Six to a global audience through Netflix," Hwang had said at the time. "I also have high expectations for the great collaborative work I’ll be having with them."

When Is The Release Date Of Squid Game Season 2?

It took him a little more than a decade to come out with the masterpiece that captured the imagination of the world. While it may not take another decade for a new season, fans of the show may have to wait for a couple of years at least for it to see the light of day. Speaking of how he came up with the concept of the show, he said, “I wanted to create a sense of connection between the nostalgic games we played in our childhood and the sense of never-ending competition that modern adults feel.” The series is itself named after the popular Korean children's game from the '70s and '80s, which is a type of tag where offense and defense use a squid-shaped board drawn in the dirt.

Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed that the new season is likely to debut either in late 2023 or 2024

Who Is In The Cast Of Squid Game Season 2?

It's very unlikely for many, if any, of the original cast to return. Most of the 456 people who competed in the Squid Game died in the first season. Seong Gi-hun (Jung-jae Lee) is the only one who survived the games. When Hwang was asked by Deadline, who would return, he said, “Gi-hun for sure.

“He will be back, and I believe the Front Man will back too.”

Another cast member who may return is Train to Busan's Gong Yoo. His character in the series was the one who recruited Gi-Hun into the game. He is still alive and may return for a second season, depending on the direction the plot goes.

Police officer Joon-ho (Wi Ha-joon) may also return, as we didn't actually see him die. There's a possibility that he may still be alive and may be a driving force for the second season's plot.

What Is The Plot Of Squid Game Season 2?

The plot of the first season wrapped up quite nicely as the Squid Game ended. There was one winner, and the rest died. Neat and tidy, right? However, the season did end with a cliffhanger when Gi-Hun makes a discovery that stops him from going to Los Angeles to see his daughter. He sees the same enigmatic man trying to recruit a new contestant. The Squid Game is still happening, and Gi-Hun feels inclined to stop it. The second season could follow Gi-Hun's quest to stop The Squid Games from happening. Or, it could focus on other Squid Games around the world with an entirely new cast. Like, Squid Game (USA), Squid Game (UK), Squid Game (Australia), etc.

All Hwang could say about the new season is that "Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again," and it will ask the question: "Is true solidarity between humans possible?" Besides humans, there's a possibility of the terrifying doll returning as well. Moreover, she has a boyfriend named Cheol-su, who can debut in the new season too.

Keep an eye on this space, as we will be updating it as new details emerge.
