Fans have been eagerly waiting for more news about the next season which was confirmed by the creator of the show, Hwang Dong-hyuk. He had earlier revealed famously how he worked on the nine-part series for nearly a decade to finally bring it to life. While it may not take another decade for a new season, it will take quite some time for it to release on Netflix.

Squid Game, Netflix

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hwang revealed that he is currently in the midst of final discussions with Netflix for a second season of Squid Game. He also admitted that he only has about three pages’ worth of ideas that he plans to turn into a script. As of now, all he can share is that there will be more games: “Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again,” Hwang has proclaimed. With how things have ended in the first season, we know for sure Gi-hun is coming back in the second season as well.

Hwang had previously stated, "There's been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently. But I do think it's too early to say when and how that's going to happen. So I will promise you this…(in English) Gi-Hun will come back, and he will do something for the world." His previous works have all been hits in their own right with some even managing to spark actual social change.

“My first focus is to create work that’s really going to provide its audience with an immersive experience, a very entertaining experience,” he shared. Teasing the second season and what we can expect he added, “I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?’" The story of Squid Game follows a group of people who are trying hard to make ends meet and are recruited to play children's games by an anonymous group for a reward of ₩45.6 billion ($38.6 million) but at a fatal cost. Hwang seems to be taking this to the next level in the next season.

In the interview, he also shared that he anticipates that the second season could be out by the end of 2023 or 2024. We will see Seong Gi-hun played by actor Lee Jung-Jae return to take on the organization behind the deadly games.
