Spider-Man is finally back in the MCU after about a month of uncertainty and we couldn't be happier about it!
Spider-Man's fate has been in a limbo for a couple of weeks as the Sony-Disney war raged on. But now, the two behemoth companies have come to an agreement that will see Marvel and Disney producing a third Spider-Man film.
Big time executives from both Sony and Disney like Feige, the chief of Sony Pictures, Tom Rothman, and the head of Walt Disney Studios, Alan Horn met up on Thursday to sign a deal. The deal will see Disney and Marvel maintaining the merchandising rights to Spider-Man as well as a 25% share of the profits in exchange for Feige's "producing experience".
In a statement Feige said:
I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.
Robert Lawson, chief communications officer for Sony Pictures Entertainment said in a statement:
We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans. We are delighted to be moving forward together.
Tom Holland took to Twitter to react to the news and he used a very fitting clip from one of our favorite movies "The Wolf Of Wall Street"
This is great news for Marvel fans because as you may well know, about a month ago Sony and Disney failed to come to an agreement which led to Sony announcing that they wouldn't be collaborating with Disney on future projects. This caused a big rift in the MCU fandom because Spider-Man is now one of the most important members of the Avengers ever since the exit of Captain America, Iron Man and Black Widow.
Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra even said in an interview at Variety’s Entertainment & Technology Summit that the door is closed‘ but also made it clear that there was ‘no ill will’ between Disney and Sony.
We are delighted to hear that Sony and Disney finally came to an agreement. The third Spider-Man movie is expected to hit theaters on July 16, 2021.
