Lebron James and the Tune Squad dominate the box office rankings today, stealing the number one spot away from Black Widow.
Lebron James and his new movie Space Jam: A New Legacy have been experiencing a lot of hate from critics. But despite the hate, the film still managed to evade the negativity and score a SLAM DUNK at the box office!
Space Jam: A New Legacy made a whopping $31.6 million in its domestic opening weekend. Industry experts had predicted that the film would make $20 million in its debut but Lebron and his looney friends shattered the backboard!
Critics gave the film a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes but the audience clearly didn't agree, giving the film an 81%. It seems like the critics' opinion of the film isn't about the film itself but more of an attack on Lebron James.
James struck back at all the haters by tweeting a story from Deadline with the caption: "Hi Haters!"
What made the film's opening weekend gross more surprising is the fact that it was also available on HBO Max at no extra cost. This was quite surprising given the film's $150 million production budget. HBO Max subscribers could have simply stayed at home, but hoards flocked to the cinema to see the tunes take on the goon squad on the big screen.
Coming in at second place behind Space Jam: A New Legacy is the Marvel superhero flick Black Widow which scored $26.3 million in North America for its second weekend.
The Marvel film now has a total gross of $264 million at the worldwide box office on a production cost of $200 million.
Coming in at third place, faltering behind, is the horror sequel Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, with a weekend gross of $8.8 million.
The box office is springing back to life after its profits were decimated by the pandemic plaguing the world. It's good to see people coming out of their homes to enjoy some good-ole cinema.
