With a star-studded cast and people behind the success of a sitcom like The Office, people had a lot of expectations from the series.
Space Force is a comedy series on Netflix that was created by Greg Daniels. Like The Office, it is a workplace comedy, and Steve Carell stars as General Mark R. Naird, the Space Force's first Chief of Space Operations. The show follows a group of people commanded by a four-star general who reluctantly joins forces with an eccentric scientist to establish the United States Space Force as the sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces. Despite having a star-studded cast and being created by the team behind a successful sitcom like The Office, the series received mixed reviews from viewers. The show has two seasons, with the latest one premiering on February 18, 2022. As for the future of the show, here's what we know so far:
Renewal Status: Canceled
The show was first released in 2020 and did not meet the expectations of the people who had a lot of hopes for the show. Even though it had mixed reviews initially, it was renewed for another season that dropped two years later. Two months after the premiere of the second season, Netflix decided not to renew the series for another season. According to Deadline, the decision was based on viewership, along with critical acclaim, against the cost of an expensive show like Space Force. The ratings should have been really high for Netflix to pick up the show for another season.
When the second season was released, it made a debut at No. 8 on the Nielsen charts at No. 7. on the Top 10 shows on the streamer, it only peaked at No. 5. Season One, in comparison, had hit the top spot and maintained for a while as well. Netflix chose to drop the show. The second season ended with a huge cliffhanger, and if there is a possibility that Netflix decides to bring the show back, the premise is already set for that to happen.
The show was influenced by the Trump administration’s Space Force creation which set the premise of the show. In the first season, we see the efforts of General Mark Naird to get "boots on the moon" by 2024 in line with the president's orders. In the second season, there is a new administration, and General Naird and his dysfunctional but endearing crew have four months to prove that Space Force is worth keeping around. Very much in line with the show's reality as well.
The show’s cast included Carell in the lead along with Lisa Kudrow (Friends), John Malkovich (The New Pope), Diana Silvers (Booksmart), Tawny Newsome (Brockmire), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), and Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley).
